Unbelievable album. Took me a long time to get into it, but now I'm of the opinion that this is not only one of the greatest metal albums created, but also one of the greatest albums of all time.
Great review, I have to say I disagree on the Dirge For November section though. I don't really think that it was intended as metal to bang your head to, it's more of an emotion song. I think in terms of the subject matter of the song, suicide, the music fits perfectly, and in my own opinion it's one of Opeth's finest. Each to their own however, fantastic review.

I think this and Still Life needs a few more listens than Ghost Reveries to sink in. Impressive album.

Dirge For November is underrated, but it is still one of the weaker tracks. The first few minutes of Dirge For November are some of the best moments of the album, though. When that song really kicks in with the weird guitar riffing backed by another guitar, it's really awesome. It gets boring at parts, though.

What i think makes the song special, is that Mikael's death vocals in the heavy part sound different than usual. Sounds like they're filled sorrow, and those clean riffs at the end... Beautiful...This Message Edited On 08.08.07

Yea, his vocals do have their really evil sounding parts in that song and the soft part at the end is cool, but their are better clean parts on the album I think.

Gah, I love this more and more with each listen. WHY DOES THIS AND STILL LIFE HAVE TO BE SO FUCKING GOOD, I CANT DECIDE WHICH IS BETTER.
The Drapery Falls is so amazing though, my favorite Opeth song of all time now, Serenity painted death has grown off me a bit, dropped to fifth after being first since I heard it.

BLASPHEMY
This and Still Life are easily Opeth's best, but it's not cuz the others aren't good, it's cuz these two albums are just flawless, period. They're that good. Morningrise I would say is my third favorite by Opeth though.
