Yeah it’s definitely a grower. I was more in the 3/3.5 camp when this first came out.

this is actually the one album of theirs that has probably most grown off me. when i first got into the band i had also just gotten into Depeche Mode & Primal Scream's more electronically-driven stuff, so this seemed like an obvious introduction after i'd heard Rotten Apples. really liked it then, still like it now but after getting into the band as a whole i'd rank it fairly low in comparison to the other original-lineup efforts (which i guess isn't saying a whole lot since i pretty much love them all)

disc 6 (Kissed Alive Too) off the deluxe box they put out a few years ago is one of my favorite things they've ever released tho

it's just so beautifully done, particularly the "San Paolo sessions" which i wish there was a more expanded release of somewhere. band sound incredible & the arrangements of stuff like "Daphne Descends" & "Tale of Dusty & Pistol Pete" are effortlessly evolved from the studio versions

the one caveat is I was never a huge fan of those Adore-era "re-interpretations" of XYU, though even that ain't too bad on here

what the heck, I had no idea those were a thing. XYU is a favorite of mine so I can only imagine how much this sound wouldn't work lmao

so, if my favourite singles (so far) by smashing pumpkins are 1979 and especially Eye, this album will be perfect for me...right?

So this is a sappy album generally better at being sappy than MC but also short of almost all that album's good qualities?

Hmmm

For Martha is about his mother who had died during Adore’s sessions.

I guess that as excuses for an album being 20 minutes too long go, that's as good as it gets

this & maybe the Machinas, I'd reckon

you should go ahead & grab the 1979 EP that's part of the Aeroplane Flies High box while you're at it

Yeah "shits on" is harsh, I like Gish. I'd put Machina II and, if we're counting them, Pisces and Aeroplane before it though.
