The first 4 songs in this album really sell it for me. It has to be the strongest combo to open a TG album. Strange Machines is the song that hooked me and I was really obsessed with it for a while. But that first note Anneke sings on Eleanor... It's just heavenly. I have to agree with the reviewer that the Mandylion/Sand and Mercury combo is a bit much. And I like Fear the Sea, but I can see why some people have reservations about it.
About Anneke, she really became my favorite female vocalist of all time and this album introduced me to her. And I thought for sure that Floor Jansen was unbeatable in my book. But man, Anneke is something else. And when you add her whole attitude and smiles on stage, she gets even more perfect.
And since Dead Can Dance was mentioned above, I have to say that I'm also obsessed with TG's cover of "In Power We Entrust..." (bonus track on the Nighttime Birds reissue). It's hauntingly beatiful.
