the intro and outro to a brick wall really sounds like sleepwalking by modest mouse

How this same band released TOoD just 4 years prior is beyond me
How that album can be considered better than this baffles me even more
|

Agreed so fucking hard

December > this

But...how??
Like seriously, not trying to be a dick, just wondering

december is dirtier, has less cleans, and has more signature metalcore than this

"How (opposite of december) can be considered better than this baffles me even more"
I think it's largely due to nostalgic value, and the fact that it's a bit of a defining album in the genre. I think, also, that the song structures are largely progressive and not verse-chorus based, that people just tend to find it more avant-garde than the rest of their material.
I consider Tear From the Red to be their best album, but I know full well that is solely due to nostalgic value, and it having been the first Poison the Well album I was exposed to.
This album was insane when they played it live. So many monstrous tracks. Zombies are Good For Your Health, Ghost Chant, Crystal Lake... man

Yeah, @Hopelust, I agree on your comments about nostalgia. The Opposite of December was the first PTW album I heard and it absolutely rocked.
I saw them live just after they released Versions and they played quite a varied set. Great gig!

"I think, also, that the song structures are largely progressive and not verse-chorus based, that people just tend to find it more avant-garde than the rest of their material."
If people really think that, then that confuses the shit out of me, especially compared to Versions. I believe this was my first PtW, but I still think this is probably their best from a musical standpoint, though The Tropic Rot gives it a good run

I believe wholeheartedly that Versions is the most 'avant-garde' thing they've done, totally. However, when OoD came out, you've gotta understand there wasn't much else (if anything) that was like it either. That album is 16 years old.

^exactly. So many other artists were influenced by december and emulated the style that a lot of new listeners will just think "what's the big deal? tons of bands do this". But that shit was groundbreaking back in the day.
Part of the reason I love and respect this band so much is that they progressed forward while everybody else was still copying OoD.

Makes perfect sense, but doesn't explain how it's better than this. This has held up 10x better over time, is more advanced, innovative (even today, nobody sounds like this), and works so much better as a whole album. I literally can't think of a single thing December has on this, other than its influence.

December sounds kinda dated in some ways. This is better fleshed out. idk this generally has more to it, I even prefer the tropic rot over December tbh

this sounds just like a better version of december in every way. vox, production, riffs, it's just way more tight and potent.
can't deny that dec was a milestone and a game changer for metalcore, but this one's just way more solid and it's a shame it gets so overshadowed by its predecessor

This album is amazing even after all these years. Same goes for Versions and The Tropic Rot imo.
