Also the only album by a hip-hop artist to have ever won Aoty was Speakerboxxx/Love Below and like 60% of that album wasn't even hip-hop so I dunno how anyone thought he ever had a chance

lauryn hill also won once but yeah, it's kind of ironic actually. the grammys are almost comical in that it's basically a popularity contest and yet what's probably the most popular genre has barely ever won the biggest prize

Album goes off the rails pretty badly in its middle third. The album through "Alright" is a solid 4, the closing stretch starting from "The Blacker the Berry" is at least a 3.5, and in between those two songs is a long, dull swath that feels like the same track on repeat for north of 20 minutes. Track-for-track this is probably a solid 3.5 but having such a lengthy block of filler practically dead center of a record can put a damper on how much I enjoy it. These are my thoughts after only two full listens though so maybe it'll grow on me, who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯
