Depends whether they dilute their artistry/sound, you can have a commercial sound and still be a great musician/artist.

i agree with both above statements just because something has a "commercial sound" doesn't make it bad.i prefer the hip hop i listen to not have that current radio trendy sound i prefer a 90's soulful boom bap influence.people are too quick to give current music a classic status tho.

in what respect please explain it hasn't done anything that hasn't been done in hip hop already & in the grand scheme of hip hop what has it done that is influential?i really want to have a sensible debate why this is considered a classic!

put compton / west coast back on the map with a refreshing sound that is both modern but with clear classic influence, plus a direction change towards more conscientious subject matter
but i mean if it doesnt sound like the 90's it cant be a classic right
do you see the hypocrisy in your opinion

"if it doesnt sound like the 90's it cant be a classic right" i never said that your making stuff up now.a classic album to me constitutes something that has never been done in a genre or is done in a very unique/unfamiliar style within the genre or is highly influential within the genre.i have albums that don't meet this criteria but i admit i think it's a classic because of a personal preference.put compton/west coast back on the map (Compton/the West Coast never has/will "fall off the map" there is plenty of MC's of the past/current of underground/mainstream that have cemented Compton/the West Coast's footprint on hip hop so in that respect he's did very little.their has always been West Coast Rappers/MC's on popular/Mainstream radio.Their has always been MC's who have pushed conscientious subject matter in current/modern hip hop.the radio chooses to continue to play trendy music over conscience hip hop so in that respect he also has done very little.

You know the fact you have your definition of a classic doesn't necessarily mean that's what a classic is to everyone. There is no across the board definition

well there are personal classics but then there are objective classics
|
| |
what would you call an objective classic tho
im sure theres plenty of detractors with their own reasons for not considering them 'classic'

like the blatantly obvious ones in terms of influence/timelessness and whatnot
illmatic, 36 chambers, straight outta compton, nation of millions, etc etc
even if u think dark side of the moon is overrated shit, theres rly no denying that its not a classic album all things considered

don't really care for the last 3 tracks but if they were up par with the rest of the album this would be a hard 5.

botb obviously these are my opinions their is a general agreement of what makes a classic album tho.
|
| |
@Funeral Are you saying Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst isn't up to par with the rest of the album? Because that's far and away the best track here
|
| |
yea if only Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst was up to par with Poetic Justice right
