Bleak is one of my favourites actually.

I'm not sure what turns me off about most of this record if I'm honest - maybe it's the feel of it or how polished the production is in places, it takes something away from it - it's all about the sound of Still Life and MAYH for me. Although I love Ghost Reveries and Watershed.

I love this but it's not even close to being the best Opeth. Opening/closing tracks are incredible & the rest is consistently cohesive & enjoyable without the huge peaks of other works.

I enjoy most of their records all the way through with no drop offs so I think that constitutes a 5 hahaha.

There are levels of enjoyment though (not arguing against you 5ing this particular release). I can enjoy something from start to finish & slap a 3.5 on it, why? Because despite the consistency the highs aren't as pronounced as they could be.

Giving lessons on what is a 5 is dumb

I'm hardly a fanboy of this band however I still to this day find this to be their best by a good margin. This album isn't flawless but it's so good I can't consider it not a classic. If I 5'ed only the absolutely cream of the crop I'd only have 4 5's, I don't take my ratings mega seriously anyway.



Anyway, I'll give you my response Demon in short form. Two of them are hearsays from friends I have in said fandom, one I am in personally:

Steven Universe: The fanbase is so bad staff members have stopped using their Twitter for it, they want very specific things about this show. One person drew fanart of one of the characters but of a different figure, they got so much hate and death threats she attempted suicide.



the Gazette: Everything I can say about Dir can be applied to this but the fanbase is usually younger and even more petty. One of my friend loves the Gazette and wanted to make a Discord but to the amount of fights she's seen from their fandom she was put off and doesn't want to anymore. Dir: 1. They can ruin their shows. So many rabid fangirls push to the front and squash the people there regardless of safety, my friend went to see them, and he couldn't enjoy the show due to them. Worst was back in 2007 when one of the fans tried to grab the singer's balls and he had to fight back.



2. The fanclub members can be shitty. Their fanclub you can't join without a Japanese address, very old fashioned and they do not advertise how overseas people can join. There's a way to do it but it's through Proxy Service and took me a while to find out. I was pissed off I couldn't join and what does a fanclub member do? Patronise me and imply I'm lazy instead of just saying how to join. From what I've been hearing from a fanclub member they don't care overseas people to have a good deal and have a high opinion of themselves, insufferable.



3. Musical ignorance and generally bad opinions. Fans are usually either Metalheads who ignore all their previous material/think they know everything or people who lack any knowledge about Metal and I cringe whenever they try and go on about how their pre-2004 stuff was the holy grail. Everyone's so opinionated it's like talking to brickwalls or they’re dense. I was going to make a Discord of them but it's pointless. It’s easy to find people who are alright but it’s impossible to find well balanced people to make a tight community around which is constantly active.

Thanks for that Calculating. Some of that IS REALLY screwed up, the hardcore fans at least do seem very unreasonable. That’s not everyone though of course. Don’t understand why people are like that about anything they enjoy.
