Personally will never understand the super hype behind TSOP

it’s the most palatable death album for people into bands like opeth and mastodon so it has a lot of crossover appeal for metalheads who wouldn’t necessarily listen to any death metal.

I was into Opeth & Mastodon before I discovered Death, yet have always placed TSOP quite lowly on the totem pole. In fact I think it (temporarily) placed above SBG but that's all.

A sample size of one doesn't refute the idea tho, as it makes sense in theory. As long as you don't mind Chuck's vox on that one, lol

Almost impossible to even rank their discog if you ask me. I still think Symbolic is the best metal record of all time, but the entire discog crushes.

Yeah I just feel like TSOP is the most "aimless" Death record and with the new direction, had Chuck not died, Control Denied stuff could have been a great realization of that intent. Def still great, Death discog is GOATed, but still same as Demon of the Fall I have it ranked lower even discounting the vocals (Honestly anything outside of Yoko Ono with Chuck Berry vocals are palatable to me)

Yeah they and Chuck have said before that tsop really should have been a control denied record but they still had to do one more Death album for the label they were on, so they cut and pasted a bunch of it together to make a death record

Still better than most dm, although it is indeed worst death (being a measly 4.0 lol)

TSOP is a great more melodic record for people to get into. It was my first Death record, and then you slowly broaden horizons and adjust taste to the earlier stuff too. Great great album if you ask me.

Oh yeah it's undeniably a great album. Just lacks something really really special the rest of their albums had

It's crazy because TSoP used to be my favorite Death album when I was younger, but now it's 2nd to last for me, right after SBG

But yeah, still a great album. I just think it sputters out quite a bit after Voice of the Soul

I can't fucking begin to explain how amazing Overactive Imagination is. It's a fucking perfect song, and then you have Trapped in a fucking Corner and the Philosopher backing it up. Holy fuck man.
