Listened to it for the first time today, found about two really great tracks (My Girls, Lion In A Coma). The others are overtly pretentious Beach Boys/Beatles songs with unrhythmic electronic stuff mixed in.

lol if you think this is pretentious you haven't heard their other albums. I'm actually starting to like this band now, strawberry jam is a great album.

I'd say it's a legit term. If an album/band appears to be about sounding different for the sake of sounding different, what else to call it? And this falls into that category for me. Somehow seems all those special electronic rhythms, weird sound combinations and the unusual vocal melodies are there for nothing. They aren't really catchy, hardly emotional and at least I can't say there's something to sink into or get carried away by.
Conclusio --> I don't know what they want to achieve except for sounding different

so, by kris' logic an album is pretentious if it's not catchy or emotional? ok

"They aren't really catchy, hardly emotional"
False! They're very emotional and you I can't help but sing along to most of these songs
To each their own
|
| |
So since you don't know what they want to achieve (this is music btw, the most abstract of arts, not
storytelling or something with a "goal") it is therefore them to blame for pretension? can't an artist
fuck around or convey emotions/etc through their own personal definition ffs
