yeah ATN was an incredible pod NFL media is so fucking dumb sometimes

most (all?) sports are a lot more gambling centric these days. Does my nut in but I guess that’s where the draw is, or the ‘money’ (literally and figuratively)

Yeah I really really hate being bombarded with people telling me to gamble any time I try to watch football or basketball

Jontay Porter is the first of many. I'm expecting a major gambling scandal involving officials before the 2020s are over

Oh yeah definitely

yeah it’s rampant! I’ve definitely noticed it a lot more in recent years. I mean there have been several professional players banned for such offences and it’s not like those people need the money. They pray on addiction and are unfortunately very savvy in the way they operate, despite regulations curtailing certain practices

it's sad because the gambling ad money essentially funds espn, barstool, the ringer etc. at this point. pretty much everything would collapse without it
|

yeah nfl doesn't really have a great podcast now. either too casual or too much jerking over technicality. feel like i really missed out with around the nfl. thankfully college football has cover 3 which is great.

Having worked at a casino, specifically working with “high rollers” I can tell you I’ve seen some shit, and that’s not even within the scope of sports gambling.
Witnessed a dude casually lose $2.5m over a weekend playing high stakes blackjack

Though I did get to see Gronk fairly regularly since he used to frequent the CT casinos when he was playing in New England before the big casinos in Boston opened up. I never worked with him but my manager did, I just got to be within 30 ft of him at times

I’m willing to admit Jamie has been in some good flicks but I’ve never liked him as he’s always seemed arrogant.

I'm just not a fan of him constantly trying to make gambling look cool, can't stand those commercials

Interesting anecdote vult, thanks for sharing. I lived in Reno for a while and was very turned off by gambling culture. It just seemed sad and pathetic, plus the casinos act as huge lobbyists and back candidates who make terrible decisions. Fortunately it seems like our generation is anathema to casinos and I’m guessing they’ll eventually go extinct once the boomers and co die off.

The sad reality is that casinos promise the prospect of local prosperity due to "potential increased tourism and out-of-area attraction" to boon the local economy. In practice, they serve to hamstring economic growth, entrap lower class people in gambling addictions and do not contribute nearly enough to local/state infrastructure to make any real difference. Also they very regularly underpay employees. Not to mention the insane taxbreaks that the tribal casinos get.

Also, traditional casinos will die but sports gambling and online betting are at an all time high and are extremely difficult to regulate, leading to a metric fuckton of underage gambling.

“Fortunately it seems like our generation is anathema to casinos and I’m guessing they’ll eventually go extinct once the boomers and co die off.”
my perspective may differ (being from the U.K.) but casinos aren’t an issue here. I mean they exist but it’s mostly a very occasional ‘event’ thing people do. The real enemy is online gambling, which does still appear to be popular with younger people. It’s far too easy / accessible these days. I’ve thought about just doing casual small fry betting for the craic, but I daren’t because the risks of a ‘knock-on effect’ and being signed up to an easy access app / account just aren’t worth it to me
