It operates on different terms from their later stuff. They hadn’t fully arrived yet. But it’s still excellent and has a few of their very best songs.

Astronauts has some of Matt’s very best lyrics
Take all your reasons and take them away
To the middle of nowhere, and on your way home
Throw from your window your record collection
They all run together and never make sense
But that's how we like it, and that's all we want
Something to cry for, and something to hunt...

Astronauts was always a favorite of mine off this album. But favorites seem to shift with each and every listen.

I mean, it’s not all sparks and fireworks but I really can’t wrap my head around someone thinking the hook is boring.
But to each their own. There are plenty of songs that everyone seems to love that I can’t really get into. As far as this album, I think Soho Riots is only pretty good while everyone else loves it.

Daughters of the Soho Riots is the greatest song by the National. It hits me maybe the hardest of any song written by them.
