Oh, it's his wife? That song toward the end makes it seem like it was someone from his past.

After four listens, I can say my definite top 3 off this are Secret Meeting, Looking For Astronauts And Mr November.

Glad someone else loves Astronauts, that’s one of their most overlooked songs.
I think Karen is more a character based on his wife since his wife’s name is spelled Carin and is pronounced ca-RIN (based on the pronunciation in “Carin at the Liquor Store”).

Astronauts is so fucking good. Wistful, poignant and bittersweet.

Damn now Baby We’ll Be Fine is becoming a favorite. This album is revealing itself to me lol. Love the “I’m so sorry for everything” bit and the build-up yo it.

Good stuff man. Can’t waot to get in to the rest of their discog. Was gonna start with Sad Songs but I’m into this now and would rather go forward. Will prob listen to SS at the end.
Is it pretty good, Doof?

Sad Songs I’ve recently flipped on and bumped from 3.5 to 4.5 - it may be more a strong 4 but there is quality stuff on it for sure. Just not a classic like the 5 albums after it. :D

Cool, I may go to that next, then move on to Boxer. Are SS and Alligator a similar sound?

The Geese of Beverly Rd is great too.
The weak links for me are Friend of Mine, Val Jester (those two being in the middle and one after the other sags the momentum of the first half unfortunately) and City Middle.
Rest is very good to great.

Eh, not really. SS is very alt-country though with a fair amount of the rawer tendencies of this (Matt screams in a couple tracks) whereas Boxer smooths out the edges into a super tight suite of melancholy chamber post-punk.

I feel that SS is a good album but not a good National album, if that makes sense?
