"respect for that. the vox are definitely something to warm up to."
yes kalkwiese. Try to keep in mind they are 3 vocalists that mainly play instruments...not excellent vocals on each own, but pretty rad combinations through their discog. Also the guitarist Brett Hinds has some cool passages on this one (Oblivion and Divinations f.e.)

I think brett hinds isn’t a “good” singer by normal standards but his voice has this quality to it that I find extremely extremely addicting.

he's got Ozzy vocals -- they're kinda out of tune and hard to understand, but his phrasing and emphasis are pretty cool so it works out alright.

yeah it took me some getting used to in the beginning but i can't imagine another vocalist that'd really work for them now

None of them are good singers. Brann is the closest thing they have to a "good" singer and even he isnt very good, though for him to do as well as he does while playing drums is impressive. They all sound good on the studio albums of course.

give a meh singer enough takes and one will turn out well. sometimes they're on point live, other times it's best to just focus on the musical side of things.

Yeah agree...and he's the drummer, so he gets pretty washed out when singing live, unfortunately. The 3 vocals make them special, cause the 3 are so different, but I would say it's a legit critic to say none of them is a great singer. In studio, however they sound pretty great once you get used to them...

You won't enjoy this on you car. Best way to enjoy is to use a quality set of headphones.

I'll never listen to Mastodon in my car again, haha. It just doesn't work for me, like Opeth's BWP didn't work there. It's simply not built for that.
Good record, I'll rate this as soon as I grasped all of it.
I read somewhere that the early Mastodon records all have weiry storybased concepts. Cool shit

Leviathan and Blood Mountain have the most badass concepts ever. Super immersive albums.

Dude! each album as a different concept and vibe...You see it's Mastodon but it's never "the same album". If you like heavier and sludgier you do Leviathan (Moby Dick theme), Remission, and Blood Mountain (a little less heavy but with insane tracks). If you're looking for a more "indie psychedelic" approach, maybe Once More 'Round the Sun. For a more radio-friendly metal approach (not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your taste) you have The Hunter and Emperor of Sand. Have a nice ride.
