Ah yeah, Interzone is a good'un and (to a certain extent) motif-proof and somewhat abstract in its phrasings. Strange album, haven't gone back to it in absolutely ages though. My point is less over whether Zorn's music in general should be described as 'hooky' (jury's out on that, lol), but more that the mechanics of his craft in how he uses, say, the pizz phrase at 0:48 in Hazor, aren't far removed from the way pop producers will place hooks in their tracks; these elements of smart songwriting are practically universal and their transferability across styles (enabling such ultimately ridiculous comparisons as these) attest to this imo
I'd imagine, given how varied his discography is, you might be able to find something for almost everyone in their, regardless of how much they love/hate the frequent use of motifs or easily reproducible earworms. [2] listen to zorn y'all

@JohnnyoftheWell: And yes Interzone, is amazing, but quite an acquired taste. It took me a while before I really got into it. I'd imagine what's different about John Zorn is mostly that he's not entirely preoccupied with hooks and his songs certainly have a depth to them. I like how he returns to the motif introduced into the intro, after the pizz phrase, and slowly developes the song from there, periodically elevating all of those ridiculously sexy guitar licks. My problem with pop music is more ideological than musical if I am totally honest, so the use of 'hooky' rhythms, 4/4 time signatures, earworms, or verse-chorus structures, don't automatically cause me to have a paroxysm. Perhaps if they were all used together in a cliche manner, I might consider it to appeal too much to a type of commodified capitalist aesthetic that doesn't necessarily appeal to me to any real extent; I rather enjoy music that refuses to play by those rules or subverts the dominant culture instead of reproducing its aesthetic norms.
All of that being said, this piece is by no means the best of TCM (although I do think that record is a masterpiece) I mean remember that record has songs like Yatzah on it which actually makes use of a continuosly repeating violin/bass line, but it's those surrounding strings which really make the trake so magical.
P.S. Rest assured, that terrible homophone related mistake in that dubble pressed quote, has since been corrected.

I'd imagine I shouldn't be taking the bait from someone using ableist slures and wishing death upon people on a music forum, but a little politeness could go a long way Sinternet.

I'm sorry if the way I formulate my sentences angers you to such an extent, you would start throwing such vicious insults at me. I have no intention to 'sound smart'. I'm from a middle-class family, take from that what you will.

I wouldn't necessarily say being middle class, aligns with whatever prejudical perception you have of me. So, if you'd be so kind as to refrain from insulting me and give me the benefit of the doubt as far as my supposed 'elitism' is considered, I'd much appreciate it.

I don't think personally not enjoying an aesthetic historically tied to capitalism implies I'm wholeheartedly convinced my music taste is superior to others. If they love (mainstream) pop music that is fine, I would never deprive someone of that right. I just personally dislike it for a variety of reasons, mainly: I'm anti-capitalist. I don't see how such an attitude implies I'm against the 'working class', something I'd imagine you'd certainly accuse me of, perhaps righly so, if I professed my deep love for the very economic order which facilitates their vicious exploitation.
I'm sorry if I've offended you in any manner, but insulting me in the way you have doesn't necessarily contribute to any productive conversation; you just seem to be projecting your preconceived notions of who I might be without substantial evidence. Perhaps reflect on that, please.
P.S. What constitutes 'being normal' within any given social context, is relative and totally arbitrary, so I don't know what your point is there.

@Sinternet: I've never actually approached minimum wage workers and asked them to read anarchist political theory. What type of pointless form of political praxis would that be? It would be amazing if more people read anti-capitalist theory, but I'd imagine someone's willingness to do so and someone's ability to do so, will depend on a variety of factors. You shouldn't expect everyone to be a 'theory nerd', everyone can criticize the world around them, reading Kropotkin can aid in that effort, but it shouldn't ever be imposed upon anyone and I find it ridiculous that you would assume I'm in favour of such a thing (read Kropotkin though, everyone).

Sinternet taking out whatever deeply-ingrained issues he has on a guy who’s willing to respond with giant walls of text (that no-one can be bothered to read), only to be told to effectively f-off every time.
