I’ve heard some songs before but should I start with their first album or is this a good starting point?

That depends. Do you want something more technical or something more raw? If you're looking for the band's more progressive/technical stuff, I'd suggest starting with Human and then chronologically making your way up to this album. If you want something more raw and brutal, any of the first three albums are a good start but Scream Bloody Gore is definitely the rawest

But honestly, I'd almost just suggest starting from Scream Bloody Gore and going all the way through. It won't be a big time commitment since there are only 7 albums, and it's fascinating to hear how the band shifted and morphed with each record

Cool I was about to say I might start with one of their first three records, I want to hear something more “straightforward” before I dive into their stuff you say is more progressive

This still has great songs obviously

But a song like spirit crusher has enough great riffs for a whole album, let alone a song

well back in like 2006 this record was often considered their best in metal internet world but keep in mind at the time bands like bodom, opeth, dream theater, nightwish were like, the godz of metal to most internet nerds. this is still a great record but nowadays i think its judged a bit too harshly for not being a death metal album

i just listened to it for the first time in forever and i cant find much of anything wrong with it but its just not quite as hard hitting as the stuff before, then again even human and ITP hit an entirely different mood anyway so its not really worth comparing too hard

actually symbolic was def the fav back in "the day" (my day) but this one was equally legendary.

the reception of the first 3 albums has rightfully gotten better though. one cool thing about the osdm revival and on a smaller scale, the black thrash revival, people dig raw shit again and arent as likely to 1.5 obsessed by cruelty while giving in war and pieces a 5. but i remember when people acted like leprosy was practically morbid visions lol

Yeah, and that's the thing. I just consider this to be more of a straight-up prog metal album than a death metal one. Yeah, it has harsh vocals, but that's literally the only reason I can think of to call it death metal

i love this album, it was the first death album i really got into and has some of chuck's best riffs. my only real complaint is that each track is structured essentially the same way. almost every tune here is: intro riff, verse riff, verse riff, chorus, verse riff, verse riff, chorus, acoustic interlude, replay entire first half of song. it lacks any real sense of variation which i think does detract from its overall quality.

but it still rules regardless.

It’s great for sure, although ITP and Symbolic eventually overtook it for me

This is true for Death’s entire discography.
