really says so much about how far hip hop has strayed when you think you can rate an album excellent and not like the artist as a person.
Anyhow, if I had never heard of him in my life, I would still say this is one of the dumbest albums i've ever heard. It sounds like a 10 year old opened up a Malcolm X wikipedia article and gave a shot at rapping. Sorry I won't give a pass to asinine lyrics because of some overrated beats that are just simplistic looped samples.

'really says so much about how far hip hop has strayed when you think you can rate an album excellent and not like the artist as a person.'
The whole liking artists as person argument in hip-hop is kind of dumb anyway because many rappers put on a persona - in many cases we don't know what they're really like do we? Of course that's changing in today's celebrity obsessed world, but then it depends on whether they cultivate a particular persona and media interpretations. It is entirely possible that people act a certain way in front cameras and microphones and act a completely different way in the privacy of their own home.
One of the reasons why Rakim was so well liked, and revered (apart from the fact that he was an excellent rapper) was that he appeared to be pretty mysterious. Go figure...

"some overrated beats that are just simplistic looped samples" you're lying to yourself if you think this. the production is dense as fuck, incorporating influences from like five or six difference styles of music. the lyrics are pretty asinine, but they're delivered in such a way that makes it entertaining and charming.

as a whole i don't like this but i don't really wanna bash the production

The production is fantastic to me. I also think Kanye should be applauded for bringing these sounds into the mainstream. I mean, what other major rapper would give Evian Christ a production credit?

i've always like Ye's production but something about this album never jived with me

charming? lol yea i dont see that...
The artist's personality doesn't necessarily matter, but in this case: Kanye used to make decent
music when he was humble(r), but eventually he became an egomaniac and his music started to suck
because of his ego .

I can't help but smirk a little when he says inanely cheesy shit like "she instagram herself like bad bitch alert, he instagram his watch like mad rich alert "

production that takes influence from different kinds of music can still be bad. I agree it's dense, but it's sloppy compared to other noise rap I've listened to.
