Summary: they looked like they could be a huge band for about 12-18 months, which is still quite good going
BCNR could possibly have that, but maybe they’re just too online

It was downwards but that is the story of 99% of bands after their breakthrough. World domination is not needed I don't understand why you mention that.
I also wouldn't put Radiohead on the same level as nirvana in terms of impact longevity, far below actually.

Arcade Fire did look poised for a minute there, but Neon Bible was a 'bummer album' - one that people tended to like a lot still, but a bummer all the same. I personally only liked about half of that album and thought it might even have been rushed/overly pressured/too over analysed by the band. It was the album equivalent of a cold shower, it just shrivelled their mojo. It instantly halved their appeal for listeners, even if the critics still generally approved
Radiohead are more an unusual case but then they were absolutely gigantic between OK Computer and Kid A (might be more a UK thing possibly)...then I'll agree Kid A made sure they'd never play the same game as other bands, they'd effectively maintain a low level hum of impact for a long time after.
Nirvana were still huge culturally for about two or three years after Kurt died and still have something even now
BCNR changing vocalist or whatever they're going to do next might have still birthed their chances of really being a 'massive hit'. Their popularity is still very scary online

Well that's just you personally. It was a big deal and a lot of people liked it more than funeral.
The Bends was way more impactful than anything they did post OK Computer. Sales aside.
"Their popularity is still very scary online"
It's really not that big. By the looks of things 100 gecs will have much more of a legacy and theirs is probably also overstated.

'Well that's just you personally.'
Nah, you knew with that album they weren't going to be Michael Jackson, Guns n Roses, Nirvana big. I mean I like(d) the band but I knew back then that was that, I still went to big shows to watch them and all that, but they had become distinctly 'indie' and not 'big rock band canon'

" Michael Jackson, Guns n Roses, Nirvana big "
I wouldn't have thought they would ever be that big after Funeral either though. And they weren't.

They're the closest guitar band to be big since the 90s, there was something there that might have tickled people a bit more, but yeah not with 'Neon Bible'
Kanye West is the closest I can think of as possibly someone to break that big, but even then not quite
I know its an outdated way of thinking but living through the 90s you expected things to become really huge...then 10 years went past and you realised that wasn't how it worked anymore

Maybe. I would have put more money on muse or something.

Arcade Fire were more unique (inc image), seemed to have a voice with something to say (what has Matt Bellamy got to say? no idea, his lyrics are guff'y mostly), seemed to harbour the rock n' roll spirit in there somewhere, seemed like a gang (name the other members of Muse in 1, 2, ...you failed), something rang authentic/genuine about them
A combo of those things tended to help
