The guitarists for this album had it so easy. Lmao. Just come in and … lol

Sleepwave wasn't well received either lol

this is definitely a stronger record than Broken Compass, and i credit the signature Underoath-isms littered across it. i think i just have a soft spot for these bands going alt-rock because unlike the usual acts in the genre ala Three Days Grace with Matt, Disturbed, Godsmack, etc. bands like this have a massive advantage in that their vocalists aren't aggressively mediocre and letting them spread their wings when they're as good as the likes of Spencer is almost always a W in my books

Yeah this is pretty clearly at least better than the one album Sleepwave did

like i know everyone would hate it but i wouldn't mind if Periphery went proggy alt-rock for an album and just let Spencer run the show even more than he does now, ala his Endur side project

"This Time It’s Acoustical" unironically yes please, Sotelo's a top 5 favorite of mine and giving him the keys to serenade would make me swoon~

Still boggles my mind they put this album out. Such a downgrade musically and lyrically.
Spencer wrote better lyrics when he believed in Jesus.

"How can you sleep here, I bear the weight of your world
I don't believe in a single word you sold to me, sold to me
I bear your burden for the last time
I swear I'm done with all of this" - Paper Lung
"I am still alive but I am just an empty shell
I give myself away to this lonely hollow hell
In my head, I'm afraid that I can't trust myself
You won't understand" - In Motion
take from this what you will but i'm not seeing the massive difference

Those two samples In Motion is clearly superior.

I mean both lyrics are bland.
Completely agree they should have reformed as a different band to do all this junk they do now

Album Rating: 3.5
i don't think either are "bland", but i vibe with this style of writing more than some expertly-written prose with a meaning i have to study anyway, because it feels more personal and real.

In Motion rules. One of the very few bright spots on this album

yep that, no frame, the opener, i gave up and hold your breath all are highlights to me. its the 2-7 stretch that (mainly tracks 4-5) threatens to drop my rating a little bit but all the others just hit for me

also, im running through this again for the first time in months, so far its holding up for me
edit: what the fuck, this is GROWING back on me, its back to a solid 4.0 but not much beyond that
