Opeth either need to bring back the death metal elements or abandon metal entirely and become a fully-fledged prog rock band. Pale Communion is held back by its heavier elements, and that's why it's their weakest album.

They should go traditional doom infused with prog, I'd dig that.

I think they should develop and perfect their prog rock sound. They have a lot of ideas but it still feels like they're in a transition period, which is understandable.

Opeth would probably suck at doom, honestly.

yeah but heritage was the same shit. if you're gonna abandon your style you gotta replace it with something original instead of just worshipping shitty 70s prog.

Heritage was absolutely original. What are you talking about?

The weaker songs were still the heavier ones, though. The jazzier, more free-form ones were the most effective.

Heritage was original dude, there's not a 70's prog album that sounds like it.

Pale Communion, on the other hand, was exactly that.

As much as I don't often agree with Anthony Fantano, I agreed with him on his assessment of Pale Communion. It feels like Opeth are now giving us textbook examples of prog, rather than putting their own spin and identity into the music. A lot of Steven Wilson's solo work feels much the same as well

You reckon you'll ever like an Opeth record again Dom? Serious question cos I don't think they're gonna change their sound much.

I can understand not liking Heritage but I can't understand thinking Pale Communion was an improvement on Heritage~

That's because it wasn't Jaccy, it was a regression ahrd.

They were both a regression from Watershed as far as I'm concerned

oh I'm sure they won't, and that's fine. if they're doing what they want to do more power to em but I certainly won't spend my time or money listening to it.

Watershed is amazing man, damn gonna go spin it now actually.

Yeah they're obviously not doing it for the money, not gonna rope in many fans by worshipping music from 40 years ago haha.
