of course if you already think the style they went for is doomed by default this won't change many minds but you'd be losing me if you feel like this was just a poor man's recreation of the already existing scene other than maybe a comparison to That's the Spirit, great album as well btw

Can't stand That's the Spirit, but tbf I don't think BMTH have ever had a genuinely great album in them in the first place. They're one of those bands whose appeal I legit don't understand whatsoever. Maybe it's because I come from the heavier side of metalcore/deathcore, idk

"tbf I don't think BMTH have ever had a genuinely great album in them in the first place." I raise you There Is a Hell and Sempiternal, 4.5 and 5 from me respectively
and ya that might be why but my favorites from them were always the more emotive cuts like Blessed With a Curse.

I can't stand BMTH in any flavor other than their first album, maybe their second.

weird, those are the two albums that aren't for me, i think they went from a 5/10 to a 9/10 quick when TIAH dropped tho

In the last decade bands like Rolo Tomassi and Rivers of Nihil kind of just make bmth and that mainstream style of metal irrelevant, and this comes from someone who gave Amo a 5.

Ember is better than this To be honest. And BMTH is too

I would also use Whitechapel as an example of a band whose experimentation arguably improved their sound instead of just watering it down

i mean maybe? but there's still very much a market for the mainstream style. i know for me i'm in that position where i like both pretty much equally.
"Ember is better than this To be honest. And BMTH is too"
i disagree because Ember just feels like it completely lacks an identity beyond "we're doing HEAVY alt-metal guys, look!" yet the hooks haven't changed and there's like maybe one glimmer of hope of actual change across the entire record. it feels like their return was practically pointless because it's just them playing the greatest hits but not even as compelling. BMTH is in the Linkin Park stage of the career where they can do basically whatever they want, and it's cool as shit seeing what they're gonna do next.
"I would also use Whitechapel as an example of a band whose experimentation arguably improved their sound instead of just watering it down"
oh yeah HARD agree about Whitechapel. i just kinda am a sucker for when a band where i find the vocals (especially clean singing) to be one of their biggest strengths for me (see: Underoath, BMTH, BFMV, Architects, Asking Alexandria, Linkin Park) kinda takes a step back and decides to push said strength to the forefront.

Imagine being one of the most popular and influential metalcore bands and then fucking up your legacy by putting out this album

i wonder if they should've just reformed under a different name and had a clean slate for this

Should've just released it as a Sleepwave record because that's what it is.

Should have called it either The Spencer Show or For The Money.

One for the Money, 2.0 for the show, won't get a 3 cause this freaking blows.

probably would be received better as a sleepwave record as well, being that it doesn't have to be compared to four straight records that are at least a 9/10 and judged unfairly as a result

It would have been ignored as a Sleepwave album, like their first.
