'Doof, is the AOTY userbase notably younger than RYM/Sput? Curious because based on my (admittedly very limited) observations of that site I would’ve thought it skewed a bit older.'
It is way younger than Sput, comically so sometimes. I always think it probably has a similar demographic to what this site did when it was in the first five years of existence.
Boney, I'd also say you might be an exception that proves the rule - you've consciously delved quite deep into the archives.

Kinda off topic but Drain You is my favourite Nirvana song atm, what a song, one of Kurt's best melodies.

Ever heard of the Bee Gees? Abba? The Beatles?

Abba isn't bad. Bee Gees were funny. The Beatles were and still are top cringe.

Ah ok, interesting about AOTY then. Guess I forget that Sput is gradually aging up since we're not exactly gaining tons of fresh users these days - I'd guess average age of active users here these days is late 20s/early 30s?
And idk, I feel like I do fit the trend is what I'm saying. I'm a bit older than it sounds like these AOTY kids you're referring to are but like I said my knowledge is severely limited if we're talking anything pre-90s. I guess I hew closer to and dig deeper within a handful of specific genres rather than just going for all the canon stuff which I guess sets me a bit apart from those.

There were a plethora of bands in the 60's that were better. If you're implying The Beatles were pop in the 60s then no. That genre didn't exist until the 80's. let's debate it!

When I think of "pop" the last band would be The Beatles. They were rock/psych from like the early 60's to maybe 69' or 70'. Pop is Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, U2, Culture Club, Tears For Fears, The Cure, Bananarama, Depeche Mode etc, that era was the birth of that genre. You can't refute this!

Maybe define what pop is to you and I'll decide if I want to debate any further

Yeah. It’s almost like you can’t define artists by a limited portion of their material? 🤔

I'm not defining it to what I think the "pop" genre is, I'm explaining the birth of it. Okay so let's take the band Heart for example. Classic rock, genre, apparently. They had a great run in the 70's. No doubt. Little Queen, Dog & Butterfly, Dreamboat Annie, then they tried something different, Bebe le Strange (bad album) and Passionworks (terrible album). But in 1985 they released one of the most powerful pop albums of all time, with 1 hit, entire album is good btw, Bad Animals. The mid 80's was the birth of pop, from my take. There was no internet, and the music videos were on fire. So this band, Heart, that went from Magic Man to Alone are one of the, if not the ONLY, band that successfully transitioned from "classic rock" to "pop" and pulled it off. They were good at it. What i'm trying to say is back then there were not categories of what bands did, they didn't go into the studio with the thought "lets be POP!" they were going with what was popular, the flow. It's kind of cool tbh how a band can transition from one thing to another and pull it off. There's been many band that have done that too since then, but Heart, that band was the first to go from 70's rock into "pop" culture with using keyboards, heavy makeup and verrrry catchy chorus's. You know?
