“ I think ABITNS is probably the most overrated classic bm album” from that perspective, I could understand that, but I also don’t think it sounds like a black metal album, aside from the vocals and raw sound, it’s very thrash / death metal sounding, and the songwriting is actually really impressive compared to the bands it inspired. Which is why I like it, but definitely not something I would put on if I’m in the mood for BM.



Blaze is also my favorite metal album of all time so I’m bias I think

Yeah, there is definitely still some leftover death metal in their sound on that album. I think that's one reason it's kinda weird for me. Some parts feel out of place to me which fenriz kind of admitted in an interview if I recall correctly. I think darkthrone really hit their stride with TH and panzerfaust. The only knock I have on TH is the lack of creativity in the drumming. The riffs and melodies on it are killer though

also yeah i agree blaze is kind of a beast of dm/bm transitional music which didn't really pan out that well for me personally. I like both the pure dm records they made before that (soulside journey, goatload) aswell as the pure bm records and especially the crust punk and classic metal inspired stuff of the last 2 decades more.

For me blaze hits a sweet spot between the two that I just can’t get enough of. Goatlord is damn underrated. I think Panzerfaust would be my second favorite. That album riffs

I think black metal and death metal are like cookies and milk. They pair wonderfully. Blaze is an incredible piece of auditory fury.

Blaze is their best black metal album. I also don't agree that there's much death metal in it, that's largely something people started parroting after Fenriz said it.
