I agree that "The Flood" into "Tethered Together" is absolutely awesome.

I also really appreciate that some of the ballads actually hit on this one. "Corner My Confidence" might be one of the most beautiful songs Claudio has written since "The Homecoming". One of my biggest gripes with Coheed's recent outputs have been that the emotions just aren't there. On this one I really feel fear, excitement, hope, and anger in a way that hasn't really been present on anything after Descension.

@Jay

I Would lean towards yes, if only because I think the context helps enhance this record by making some of the recurring motifs hit...

...but at the same time, I think it'd still be a great experience if you are just interested in strong coheed jams.

Thanks Odal! I might have to go on a discog run soon, haven't jammed them in awhile but I absolutely love the old records.

This has the most in line with the Good Apollo records.

I think if you ever liked their old stuff, a cursory run through the stuff you missed will yield enough treasure to be worth it but the journey won't be super even lol

I'd say it's more important to brush up on the Afterman. If you're worried about the stories...

Vaxis One: Main dude and his wife used to be thieves but he left her behind. They both end up on a prison planet where they rekindle their love and escape.

Vaxis Two: They have a kid together who is comatose and lives within his mind/is tapped into the universe. Main dude and his wife steal something that's important and are hunted by the evil empire. During a fight they open up their cargo and a Prise comes out as well as a being called a window who can see into other worlds. At the appearance of the window, their son becomes conscious and pulls Sirus Amory through a portal created by the window.

I haven't actually read the stories so don't kill me if you have. I plan to buy the books and read them sometime now that my faith in Coheed has been restored.

Jay, I don't know the last time you jammed Coheed with a new release but you at least owe it to yourself to listen to The Afterman: Ascension. I think it's just as good as their first 3 records.

They're far from my favorites but yeah, you should at least listen to Vaxis I and II before this as well.

First half was wonderful, really enjoyed it but feel like I would appreciate this more if I familiarized myself with the lore. Didn't think getting into Coheed would be such a homework assignment lol

Lore of Ascension is pretty tight. The back half is definitely a little more of a grower if you're not a huge Coheed head but it had me in a chokehold when it released. I think Subtraction is probably the band's most underrated song and I'd argue it's their best all acoustic track.

The stories are awesome and this is definitely the best thing they have done since Good Apollo.

I don’t really care about the lore from Afterman, but I did get a lot of emotional resonance out of looking at all the illustrations that were done for each of the songs in that era. That was a really cool touch

Title track, Flood, Searching for Tomorrow and Play the Poet are the big big big highlights from this album. I’d take just those 4 songs over the entirety of Vaxis 2

@Jay if you go to my profile page I did a write up for the concept of the Afterman. That'll give you a gentle crash course of the concept.

I haven’t looked into any of the stories or studied the lyrics because the lore is almost certainly garbage

Nah, the lore is pretty solid. @walrus I was trying to remember who did that list thanks for the reminder!

Nope, wasn't just a novelty/honeymoon period. I gave it a break for a couple days, and this album is still a hoot. Unbelievably good stuff. I think with Coheed, I'm dangerously close to letting nostalgia convince me something is half decent because of how much I've wanted to like their output in the last MANY years...but this is easily their best since the original 3.
