Ok its not perfect lol. I have a fair amount of gripes with it. Janie to me doesn't work that well as an intro track to me. A pet peeve I have is that I dont like when an album has effectively two intro tracks, and this is what it feels like to me. Willoughby's Theme could have been more than fine to open the album, to me. Then put Janie as the final track. Willoughby's Interlude is also a little long for my taste. Cut it's length in half and it'd be better off. I overall find the album more inconsistent than Preacher's Daughter. The middle section of the album drags quite a bit for me, but then it ends strong... So just dont really know what to think of it right now.

The new album is surprisingly solid. I really dig the Dust Bowl and Tempest, and the Willoughby instrumentals are also great. I would have loved to hear more drones and experimentation, but at least there are no extremely cringe moments. Still, I think I'll keep skipping Fuck Me Eyes for a while or for good.

Yeah, Willoughby's Interlude is growing on me a bit more. Feels like a direct reflection of what was Nettles. Some really gorgeous ambience going on.

New one is incredible. It lacks the highs of Preacher's Daughter, and isn't as dark lyrically, but it's Ethel Cain's prettiest album. Like a full album of House In Nebraska's. Fuck it, I'll absolutely take it.

I would not describe House In Nebraska as "pretty" by any stretch lol. Thoroughfare and Strangers I would say much more so.

"Pretty" as in both lyrically and sound wise is what I was referring to

God damn she’s had a hell of a year. First listen I like it more than Preacher’s Daughter, but it also took like a full week of jamming that before I really started to see its flaws.
Tentative 4.5

Janie, Nettles, Dust Bowl, Fuck Me Eyes, Waco... basically every song with vocals is incredible and the ambient pieces are nice atmosphere builders that don't drag. I legit could see myself preferring it over Preacher's Daughter but I'm going to temper my enthusiasm until I've listened more than once. 4.5 based on my initial spin though.

I never got *too* into the narrative on Preachers Daughter, I got the broad strokes, but evidently the new one is a prequel so I guess I’ll do some digging. Maybe wait another week or so for all of the genius annotations to get added if they’re not already.

This is a more intriguing project overall than Willoughby. Had there been less focus on dark ambient overall or a bit more vocals, it would have worked great as her second LP.

Well, I'm a dark ambient lover and I confirm that this kicks ass. Such an unsettling, ghostly atmosphere lingering over it. Just enough noise without being irritating. Really well done stuff. I don't like it more than PD or Willoughby, but it's still amazing for what it is.

I think it’s a perfect companion piece to the darker elements on both of those records
