@colton I’ve tried to explain that it’s not necessarily intentional at all
|

I agree that if it is intentional and contrived that it is gross.

“ not allowing people to rate in 0.1 increments is ridiculous and holds this site and RYM back a lot. why should people not be given that freedom”
that kind of granularity is unnecessary for me personally and would just lead to a lot of overthinking thats completely unnecessary. i just use ratings as a way to log what i listen to, the rating itself is secondary

but regardless of intention the community aspect should not be anyone's main motivation. because it'll hold you back from finding what you really love. and of course when I love a certain artist or album I want to share that with other people but it's not because it provides me a sense of community but rather because I want other people to enjoy it the same way I do
|

I am in full agreement with both of your last two posts

although I guess maybe I'm kinda imposing that on other people. but for me personally the stuff I listen to and enjoy has nothing to do with anyone else
@ryus fair enough, but I think for a lot of people with thousands of ratings it gets hard to distinguish between all their 4s and 3.5s which they actually enjoy to differing extents but are forced to rate the same
|

“but for me personally the stuff I listen to and enjoy has nothing to do with anyone else”
Me neither, but it has brought me closer to people by happenstance, which is what you were just saying. But I think we are on an entirely new topic at this point.

I guess I just don't fully understand what you meant about how everyone rates for optics whether it's conscious or not

Album Rating: 3.0
why stop at 0.1 increments why not go to 0.001 colton

well 0.1 increments between 0.0 and 10.0 allows for 100 different ratings to Sputnik's 9. I think over 10x more freedom is a good place to start. but there's literally no difference in the amount of effort it takes to code it so I really don't understand why sputnik and RYM are built this way
|
| |
In a social setting optics play a part in almost any public decision, whether consciously or not
|
| |
ryusmusic.com will have a binary rating system

there's too much community on this website and it jacks everyone's autism up to 11. i've come to prefer rym because there's not really much community, nor anything that really pulls you into participating. You can just listen to music and rate what you feel. People on this site care way too much what other people think
also rym's catalogue, rating singles, track-by-track rating, music vids, bootleg releases, etc. that site clears this shithole no offense to the people who never left and still consider this site to be a core part of their identity. The reviews on this site are much better than most rym reviews so this is more of a site for people who love writing than it is a good site for rating and cataloguing music

@dadkungfu yeah if you're at a party or something and someone's talking about an artist they like that you only kinda like, you might amend what you say to be less critical of that artist than you would otherwise be because you don't wanna be annoying and argumentative and what not, I get that. but does that really apply on sputnik for people?
@ryus ryustomatoes?

rym auto recs are also banger

My fav film critics system is cute. Yearly lists “universally” color coded

Still haven't checked this out, and I'm not sure I want to. I'm a bit Lana'd out these days

Your ratings play a large part in your public persona on Sputnik, just think of how many opinions here are dismissed offhand by a snide comment referring to someone’s pie chart or their 5s (Colton ;)). So with ratings being such a public element of one’s presence on the site, it’s pretty easy to be calculating or to overweigh the optics of certain ratings when deciding those ratings. I’ve def been guilty of this, though I don’t believe people necessarily or even typically do it out of bad faith, but rather as part of the communal nature of this site as others have mentioned.
