"just rejam either of the two records that came out before this, you've heard it all before"
Someone isn't paying close enough attention to the subtle differences that make the atmosphere on this record so much more varied than the last EP and album....
|
| |
there are differences yes
they are vastly outweighed by the commonalities
this is unsurprising bc we all know the one Big Thing this band does at this point
this is less varied than ADTF and nothing on it is as good as the last 2 trax on the EP

Yea, I like this way more than Raging River, even though Wave after Wave is an incredible closer.

ngl Cold Burn did give me Three Bridges vibes but it’s its own thing for sure

The only similarity to me is the vocal delivery which I have kind of come to expect from these guys. The pacing on this record is some of the best I've heard, each track really makes way for the next on in the sequence perfectly

Damn. Raging River sounds way darker than this. I can see why those songs where released separately. Dawn to Fear is perfect as it is. It's unbelievable they wrote these three records at the same time.

This is such a daft comment. Also, Wave After Wave is good but I’d pick at least 3 tracks from this over it.

I’d put Blood Upon Stone, Cold Burn and the title track above it. It wasn’t even the best track on that EP for me.
I couldn’t say where this ranks at the moment, because recency bias factors in to a lot for me, but it’s probably top 3/4.
@Johnny: I just don’t know why you’d even bother saying that in the first place. If someone is a fan of the band, they’re more than likely going to get at least something from this. Directing them to the previous two albums, which they’ve no doubt literally ‘heard before’, just seems intentionally obtuse.

It's Johnny, he has to wave his anti-metal flag somehow. Even the best metal has to have SOMETHING wrong with it, so he holds it to impossibly high standards.

Calm down everyone he still rated this very high

Still finding it hard to listen to much else besides this.

understandable, although I've started saving it for 'special moments' - fortunately one may be upcoming later
Pika, 3.8 isn't 'very high' for Johnny, I'd say it's more moderately high, but yeah he clearly does like this - although it doesn't refute my point that I feel he holds metal to impossible standards sometimes. Probably the same with me and certain genres though, so whatever I guess. It's just a funny schtick, especially considering how broad the metal spectrum is and this being his self-proclaimed favourite sub-genre.

yes every issue i have with this verysolid album is 100% endemic of a generalised gripe with metal and not at all to do with a formerly innovative band i used to love getting diminishing returns off their increasingly predictable tropes
you're both much better value having respective hysterics virtue signaling over palestine and malding over being the only one not to get in-jokes on games the rest of the universe played years ago than you are being pushovers for one of this site's biggest bandwagon acts

I feel like Johnny just admitted to his expectation that CoL need to reinvent metal every time they release something, but half of his comment was shrouded in nonsense so I'm not sure
