I remember discovering these guys by accident via a YouTube recommendation after finishing a Sea of Tranquility video. This one isn’t too bad

I finally get this. This style of melodeath is one of my favorites. It takes that melodeath approach and makes things a lot more atmospheric. This should really be called atmo-melodeath, but I get that's a very long title. It's more polished than atmoblack while having somewhat of a similar vibe. Obviously far from identical, but somewhat reminiscent of that style.

Yeah that's a kinda good way of putting it I s'pose. Everything v spacious and patient and comes together for massive catharsis and tbh Be'lakor is the best band to do it.

No doubt.

Well said Saxbones, imo it could be even more patient and spacious. Was listening to Fraught yesterday and thinking they could stretch that song out to a 60 minute concept album.

pretty much. the competition has fallen off considerably in the last decade. hopefully we get a new Be'lakor next year or soonish, and hopefully another band releases something of similar quality in this tired genre. it's in dire need of resuscitation

Agreed this is peak progressive melodeath but hard disagree “the competition has fallen off considerably in the last decade” or that it’s a “tired genre. it's in dire need of resuscitation”.

Just this year you had excellent albums from

Eternal Storm - A Giant Bound To Fall

In Vain - Solemn

Machiavellian God - Beyond The Void

Brazen Tongue - Of Crackling Embers and Sorrows Drowned

Iotunn - Kinship

Blighted Eye - Agony’s Bespoke

All at least a 4.0 but the best 2 being Machiavellian God and Iotunn

The new Iotunn album is great, so many moments where it slowly builds up to an amazing payoff

Iotunn was great, agreed. Hasn't really hooked me, but I should give it more spins.
