it seems like a deliberate choice since the last two had some similar issues/same producer but the guitars are oddly "small" and the drum tones are not great. music is reasonably good though unlike vengeance falls or something

I forgot where the source is for it but supposedly they had way less of a recording budget for this album due to the pandemic and short time span between the two albums. Which is why this album sounds a little bit more thin compared to the last two

That's a pretty bad excuse to me. I'd argue my band's second album had better production (not perfect but better) than this and I can 100% guarantee we had less of a budget than freaking Trivium. Production isn't about budget anymore. The guitar tone and drum sound sucks because of the decisions made by the band.

Doesn't ruin the album but it's pretty lackluster.

You'd also think that a band on their 10th album would have figured out production by now.

Surely the production isn't that bad if it's still a 5 lol. What are you playing/streaming it on?

This sounds just fine to me. In particular I love the drum sounds on here

It's not the worst thing ever. It's just that ever since TSATS the production has gotten steadily worse.

I think it’s got to do more with priority mixing issues… eg: the buried screams in the final moments of the title track. They’re intense and pushed so far to the back it’s baffling.

Gonna give this a listen. To the Rats was in heavy rotation in my teens but outside of that I've never been a big Trivium fan. Love me some solos though so hopefully I'll find something cool here. Need to go back and check Shogun too I suppose

I'd guess Trivium is one of those bands that are old school and still absolutely insist on recording in a real studio with all these producers/engineers etc. just based on how things were done the first decade of their career. That costs a lot of money, and I bet they lost out on an absolute fuckton of money not being able to tour WTDMS. It's a bad excuse in 2021 where you can make a pristinely produced metal album from your bedroom but I think it's likely the truth.

not really, the problems with the production are similar to those with the last two albums. everything feels weirdly pocketed and the mix isn't very open. it's just bizarre going from another josh wilbur mixed album (silence in the snow) which sounds pretty good to this

If I think Shogun is their best yet, I won't really love this, will I?

This is only good in terms of their post-Shogun output. Sounds great at first but if you keep listening it becomes pretty mediocre.

Feast of Fire and the production sounding a little bland are my main complaints. Other than that is a fine Trivium album.
