I can't believe everyone saying they like Springsteen-esque stuff more than Springsteen. Darkness on the edge of town eats this album for breakfast. I won't even get started on TGA

Well, I don't think this is amazing, but it's ok, and I could see someone rating this as great (or excellent if they're feeling generous / connect with it hard). I also think an average score makes sense for some listeners, and rating it below that is probably a bit mean or you don't like the genre. I just struggle to see this as a classic.

i like this but i think it sounds too much like springsteen for its own good. i love projects like the gaslight anthem/alex cameron/the war on drugs because they are influenced by the heartland rock sound but in a new spin with a lot of character

Springsteen’s older stuff is actually quite great. Gotta relisten to rate.

I’m not big on any of his newer stuff. Not my thing at all.

Yes debut Springsteen album is included in his golden run for me as well.

To each their own, the debut is pretty great to me but I'd definitely take any of the albums in that run which follows ahead of it

Always been pretty lukewarm on these guys but this review has me really wanting to check this out. I grew up about an hour away from Nephi and... yeah, shit's fuckin bleak these days

Pretty interested in your take then. It's one thing to be on the outside looking in while also acknowledging the vast musical and lyrical progression, but it's another thing to have firsthand knowledge and be able to speak to inaccuracies or generalizations made and/or why certain moments are even better than we know.

"Holy shit why is this so good?"

I) vast lyrical improvement

II) thematic cohesion

III) basis in reality

IV) memorable melodies

V) low consumer expectations

That's about as well as I can guess.
