"disregarding them for being unambiguous feels unfair"

That's not what I'm doing. The point could still be crystal clear and it could still be more interesting to read. Just my two cents. Maybe 'hollow' was a bit harsh. lol And I still think this record is fine to be clear, even if I have a lot of criticisms. Definitely better than mediocre. The 3 is accurate.

I only brought up the emo comparisons in relation to the genre tags and you mentioning emo btw. Yes, punk and metal bands of all stripes/styles have sung directly about politcal issues for decades. I guess whether they pull them off or not is just down to many different contexts.

"approaches issues that a lot of other bands don't"

Leftist bands aren't exactly rare in the underground these days. And again, I agree with all their stances. I'm just talking about the art rn.

I think it's a fine fit here, so we'll probably just have to disagree on that part.

Yeah if they were right wing and wrote lyrics in the opposite direction, that would be rare in this kind of scene.

And they would probably get shit on for it.

Take these lyrics from When Will I Return from Swans' album The Glowing Man.

"His hands are on my throat

My key is in his eye

I'm splayed here on some curb

Shards of glass

A starry night

When will this pig-man stop?

His stink is like a dog

My life is mine to keep

I still kill him in my sleep

The car door is open wide

The mouth of death still calls my name

I'll beat him on his face

And I stab with all my strength

And I scream until he goes

I scream until he's gone

Then I crawl across the road

Then I crawl across the road

When will I return?

When will I return?"

It's not Shakespeare (who isn't at all my bar for good writing btw), it's just bitter and terrifying and clearly anti-rape also.

I think Svalbard is just as capable of stating things plainly and accurately portraying their desired message. That's just gonna be where we split.

Just as capable? I mean, none of the lyrics on this record hit as hard. It just feels kinda obvious in comparison. A lot of the Svalbard lyrics make me feel like if I believe what they're saying already (which I totally do) then I feel a little pandered to/they're preaching and I'm the choir. And if I didn't agree with them, then it's not gonna change my view. The words gotta make you FEEELL SOMETHIN' MAN. lol

And they're still passable lyrics with all that said, I just wouldn't call them particularly good.

"STOP USING MY BOOBS TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM LIKES"

Was this actually one of the lyrics? Lyrics are the last thing I try to focus on.

Like I said, that's where we disagree. Whatever strikes someone as meaningful varies greatly. I think the stark honesty of a track a la "Listen to Someone" is very good at providing emotion while also being upfront about the meaning.

"Lyrics are the last thing I try to focus on." I feel that when they're good/great/amazing they can add so many dimensions to the music that you didn't feel before. And when they suck, they can ruin something about it lol. If they're at least decent, you can ignore them or not pay attention to them most of the time. I definitely usually listen to an album before I ever read the lyrics, maybe even a few times before.

I could agree. The wording could be better but the message is gold. Probably the best set of lyrics here tbh.
