"I've long since fallen off the prog train but oddly enough, my two favourite metal albums this year are prog metal (this and Burden of Life. check it out, boys)"

Burden of Life rules, agreed. I'm hit-or-miss with prog -- this feels like a hard 3.5 except for Canary Yellow, which is just gorgeous

yeah Burden of Life doesn't really sound like Haken at all (it's pretty melodeathy) but I suspect that the kind of music fan who likes Haken would also like BoL

It's high up there for sure Vic. This and the Protest the Hero albums are pretty much in constant rotation for me.

I've been drifting away from prog these recent years, but I feel 2020 is my least prog year in preference. Every prog release I've been waiting has been at least mildly disappointing - apart from PtH, who still didn't change my worldview.

You listen to the latest Pure Reason Revolution album? I wouldn't say it's wholly prog but that's another tasty one from this year.

Well the callbacks to previous albums have become less egregious with time, this is getting better and better

@WalrusTusk, Well, I did give it a try, but it didn't grab me. Perhaps I should spin it again sometime

Bro, if "Messiah Complex" doesn't get you then you really must be going through a prog slump. That song is an incredible culmination of Vektor and this album.

It's a nice prog suite, really enjoy the throwbacks. But overall it less than the sum of its parts imo. I don't feel like it works as a bigger composition

I love how it just completely dissolves into madness before resolving as this triumphant, and simultaneously ironic ending. The Cockroach kind finally ascends and then accidentally kills himself in a moment of pure hubris. The whole song is so powerful and sinister. I think laughed at least three times the first time i listened to it just because I was enjoying what I was hearing so much.

In other words, i disagree haha. But I get Haken is not for everyone. What doesn't work for you?

I never read the lyrics tbh

Maybe I should

It's not like it's not working or anything, it's just that the album leaves me cold save for a few tracks

Definitely not for everyone, but I really am puzzled how someone could be into this sort of thing and not love the ever living shit out of this album.
