like there’s nothing bad about it but idk, it’s just not quite doing it for me and I have no idea why

I'm probably immune to the hype due to not liking their last album, although admittedly I was persuaded to give this a go by all the positive vibes. My expectations were low and they've definitely been blown out of the water, in a relative sense at least.

The last album is why the naysayers are suspicious imo. Because I needed a lot of listens to get into the FoR sound. My very fist comment in Vigilance was about how they sound like a high school band.
But they had a hook in me with some melodies on Arrow and Kiln, and after many listens I had to admit it was amazing. And I am a bit ashamed at my first reactions.
So seeing someone stroll in with a dismissive attitude after one listen, is a very transparent vanity project and will forever mark them as sub-average people.

Who exactly has done this? I'm not refuting the possibility of such behaviour outright (we know it happens), just not sure there's enough evidence to suggest these reactions are on the first attempt. In fact, very few people have given entirely negative appraisals.

This seems like a pretty hard grower. 2nd and 3rd listen were both better than the one before it. Curious to see what the sealing is here, which will determine my final rating.

just now listening to this but the sound is fucking brilliant and the music seems to follow suit.

Right now, love the first half, the second half is dense as fuck. Need more spins.

I've listened to this in full about 10 times, and it gets better each time. Vigilance Perennial was a grower as well. There is an immediate connection I felt to both, but repeat listens really strengthened my appreciation for their sound.
But also, did anyone pre-order the vinyl and receive it yet? I'm still waiting on mine and hoping it didn't get lost in the mail.

“I think what may be throwing people off and what threw me off with them for a long time was that if you look at FoR from a black metal perspective, they're kinda lacking in edge. It's not a very "black metal" black metal album. What they have been for this album and the last one specifically are just a kind of meditative, loose amalgamation of prog rock and american folk and post rock and shoegaze with a kind of general atmo black coating. If I come into it looking for some black metal I get a little let down because it's a very soft and melodic and warm album, but from the correct perspective they're very beautiful songwriters.”
I didn’t get a chance to address this post yesterday, but I think it brings into the picture a very interesting point about people’s expectations for black metal these days. I wouldn’t call this album deluded in any sense of the word, but I just wondering --- who still expects ALL their black metal to be cold and harsh in 2019? This isn’t a challenge, this is a legit question. Obviously a good portion of it still is, but is it that jarring to get a warm black metal album anymore? And hey – if springtime black metal isn’t your thing, totally fair, I’m just curious who still wants/needs/expects [the majority of] their black metal to be frostbitten.

Completely agree with that. There’s tons and tons of black metal bands/albums that aren’t based in the 90s style of Darkthrone/Burzum/Mayhem mindset that black metal has to be as cold and under produced as possible. Fuck, it’s 30 years later. Let these bands evolve and figure out what sound is best for them ya know?
