Black metal is better when you can hear the bass. It's usually doing fairly simple stuff (even by black metal standards) but sometimes it is very nice.

I don't think it's perfect, but most of the songs on there are definitely good. I like it more than MoP tbh, but RtL > all their other stuff

But it's true, the production is actually prett bad. They had to copy and past choruses, because the singing style of Hetfield was so harsh on his vocal chords. It's the most obvious on Shortest Straw

The pieces in And Justice For All... are also waaaay too fucking repetitive. Like, there's a good album hidden there, and Metallica could make good stuff that's longer than 6 minutes, but they fucked up in that album. The worst part is that after And Justice For All... instead of improving that style they just made radio rock. With a few songs longer than 6 minutes for some reason.
