Yeah, in the ideal case, but I get bored when a band tacks half of a dozen parts of half of a dozen songs together and calls it a track. There has to be some coherence that my mind can hold on to. If that's done correctly, yeah, prog metal can be one of the best genres because it can combine unique atmospheres and enormous energy. It just has to keep away from getting lost in the "djents" too much.

Steven Wilson has rarely made prog metal. Dream Theater, I agree for the most part but they have some gems in the 90s.

Ha, they're really not my style. I like gothic atmospheres and stuff, so I figured I'd like them more, but most of their stuff is just a nice sounding gothic soup as a premise without ever going anywhere. That said, both albums I heard had some amazing tracks, especially on the first halves. Children of the Sun for example, or the first ... I think first 3 tracks of LOTDS. But as a whole, I thought both albums were rather tiring.

Yes because that DEFINES prog metal, there's plenty of great prog metal in various forms, not liking two artists (two I actually agree on, mostly) has very little relevance.

re: prog i see what you guys are saying, but in my experience, that and post-rock have been two of the most boring genres, or at least ones plagued with generic shit. i love me some good prog metal, it's just hard af for me to come by

Sure, there's a lot of generic prog but it's such a wide genre descriptor that it comes in so many different forms, even the derivative stuff, it's just knowing what to look for.

Also, you have true progressive/experimental stuff & copycat bands which are prog in style but not in originality terms. Anyway, very off-topic.

I don't find Vulincura cheesy at all & Black Lake is one of her very songs. It is perhaps 10 minutes too long though.
