giving this another listen now and I still don't get all the praise for this

I rarely say this about anything cause usually it feels like a cop-out complaint, but I feel like this has way more positive reception just because it's a Chevelle album, and if any other similar band in the genre released this same thing, it wouldn't be anywhere near as well-received as this currently is

Well to be fair Ash I'm starting to feel the same way. It feels like a lot of it was heavy for the sake of being heavy.

gotta lower my ratings for this. I enjoy Chevelle for what they are and I know they are not known for their musicianship, but the guitar work on this album is soooo boring. There's like nothing to it.

I kinda get the feeling they intentionally approached the songwriting here in a simple way in order for them to be able to really get into things live. Their more complicated work has been great on disc, but not so great on the live footage I've seen, whereas some of their simpler stuff translates really well to a live setting

that caveat doesn't salvage this from being a let-down though

True I suppose, but I mean, tons of stuff on Vena Sera and Sci-Fi (my favorite albums of theirs) had layered guitar parts, what sounds like more complex (for Chevelle standards) drum techniques, and cool production effects that the band kinda skimps out on when they play it live. You've gotta admit when comparing those records and this, this sounds rough and simplistic as hell.

Ash, you have a point about Chevelle not being able to play the more layered songs as good as the more simple/raw ones. Even though they're still worth to see live, they are very uneven. They usually have songs in their setlist that make them look good, and others that simply doesn't do them justice.

I remember a while go seeing them playing Panic Prone almost to perfection, but they flat out sucked trying to play Breach Birth. Most of the Vena Sera tracks don't translate well live for them either. So maybe, rather than trying to make an album that was heavier to please the crowd, they're probably shoving in new stuff in their catalogue that they can play easily live. Have you heard them play Joyride for example? It sounds almost exactly the same. Seems that's why they are cutting off melodic tracks too, since Pete sometimes misses notes live.

I still prefer this over new Deftones, though, as far as alt rock/metal goes.

That reminds me I haven't heard the new Deftones album. I fail at loving music.

I feel like this has been the case with everything since Sci-Fi Crimes, they have all been huge disappointments since then but they keep getting passes because they sound like typical Chevelle and aren't insulting levels of bad. This one is way worse than the last 2 though so I really don't get what everyone is going on about. That average is coming down though of course.

This was definitely a step down from Gargola, but it'll definitely deserve the 3.7-3.8 rating it'll eventually rest at. The heaviness on the album might be fairly simple but is arguably just as effective as it needs to be.

The simpleness isn't the issue for me here, it's the aimless heaviness. La Gargola was arguably their heaviest, and every song had a purpose.

It's weird because this made me like la gargola more, just as gore made me like koi no yokan more. I've been meaning to bump their ratings for a while now lol

La gargola was dark and heavy, and definitely felt more focused. Other than the dammed, there weren't many moments I didn't like or question their direction. This has plenty of those. Like for example last days, though it has a solid bass riff and cool sounding bridge, you can tell pete had no idea what to do vocally or lyrically with it. Same goes to enemies. A lot of the times I wish he would just shut up because the screams often feel forced, and the lyrics have never been this repetitive for them either.
