As a fellow Morningrise lover: I acknowledge that some may find the songwriting on that album to be disjointed compared to this, but that's not something I mind. I find that the abrupt changes, especially in Black Rose Immortal, help to paint the emotional landscape of the song. It's harrowing, it's complex, it contradicts itself, but that's all part of the "story" if you want to call it that imo

What, musical analysis pisses you off? What's the problem?

Aiwaz, you're really not doing yourself any favours in this thread. Firstly "newpeth" fan? This and Morningrise are my two favourite Opeth albums and I have their latest two albums 2.5'd so I guess you have me confused with someone else.

Secondly do you really need me to pick out one particular moment? Every song on Morningrise besides the closer is incoherent in structure but in some ways it's all part of the album's charm in the sense that its a rawer collection of ideas making it more interesting to me than say Blackwater Park. Objectively Blackwater Park has much more coherent songwriting but I'd take Morningrise's atmosphere and individual moments over it any day.

Yeah I got the idea, more or less.

"Also, everything you guys are mentioning about the problems with Morningrise are the key elements of the album on what makes it prog."

Prog doesn't have to be disjointed or incoherent. It often is but it's certainly not a factor that makes something prog.

It seems to me, Aiwaz that you just can't comprehend any sort of analysis that seems like a negative when its directed at an album you love, which is ridiculous. I love the album too.

Your only argument towards the examples given seems to be "no it's not disjointed because it's one of my favourite songs/moments in Opeth's discog" or something along those lines.

I didn't know that you have to be coherent to make prog rock.

Because you mentioned that the song structures in this album are incoherent.

Yeah but who said that they had to be coherent in order to be prog? They can be either, its not a factor that defines whether something is prog or not.
