sure Earthside may be more "cinematic" than those bands but they very much belong is the same group as them.
"Those bands completely lack cinematic/atmospheric elements to their sound."
lol, no they don't. (And seeing that you haven't even listened to Arcane and gave Haken low scores says a lot)
"They're traditional bands with a built-in frontman rather than composers that collaborate with vocalists, ensembles, and instrumentalists."
I can name about 10 different progressive metal/rock artists that do this, Haken and Arcane being two of those.
You're basically saying that because they have a bigger and more epic sound than most other prog metal bands then they should fit in alongside Hans Zimmer and other soundtrack composers who utilize the same methods? If that's the case then I should be labeling Devin Townsend as being similar to John Williams and Michael Giacchino and Hans Zimmer should be labeled as prog metal. You're looking at it completely from a technical standpoint. Sure, Earthside may not be as "technical", but their music is built from similar ideas and practices that's been done by several other prog bands in the past.

Staaaahhhhhp, Toondude. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of progressive acts out there, what makes you choose Arcane and Haken as the Earthside soundalikes? Picking a random progressive band out of a hat, most of those bands I'd choose by chance would have a more similar sound and ethos to Earthside than Arcane and especially Haken. Haken and Earthside are on polar opposites of the progressive music spectrum. They value completely opposite things in their music. For you to put Haken as one of their 5 most related artists...explain yourself! I don't get it! And to remove Porcupine Tree to wage your Haken fanboydom? Really?? Earthside's biggest influence of all is Porcupine Tree!!

I think these guys really have a Katatonia feel as well, wouldn't be surprised if Jonas will be featured on a song in the future.

"what makes you choose Arcane and Haken as the Earthside soundalikes?"
because I think they sound like them, definitely not to a T or anything but I think they belong in the same boat at least.
"Haken and Earthside are on polar opposites of the progressive music spectrum. They value completely opposite things in their music."
how? they play the same sub-genre of the sub-genre
"And to remove Porcupine Tree to wage your Haken fanboydom?"
fun fact: I was not a fan of Haken's last album. In fact it was actually one of my least favorites of last year. As for PT, even if they're an influence I don't really think they sound a lot like Porcupine Tree. Again just because they're an influence doesn't mean they sound like them entirely. (Also: waging my fanboyism? I'm stealing that XD)
The thing is that Eathside is a prog metal band. Zimmer is a film score composer. They're very different artists that play different different music for different purposes. You really think people other than you are going to be thinking "gee, this sounds a lot like Hans Zimmer" when they listen to this. Aside from maaaaybe Mob Mentality (one song out of the entire record), I really don't think so.
Obviously you see this in a different way I do. That's fine, music is subjective, yadda yadda and all that BS. But if you're seriously that upset about the "similar bands" tags then you might as well log off cuz that happens a lot on this site whether you like it or not. I mean just look at the one guy who tried to convince the mods that Mudvayne was prog metal.

I messaged Jamie a little bit ago. He said their albums take longer than the usual 2-2.5 year release cycle because of their OCD nature in composing as well as getting all the collaborations together and the writing the huge orchestral/ensemble arrangements can take longer too. Also they go more with the real production as far as real drums and real amps as opposed to Superior Drummer and Fractal Audio Axe FX or Kemper that a lot of the current djent bands use. I think the fact that they take a long time with their albums is part of why we like this first one so much.

Seriously though quality over quantity. As much as I want a new one I’m okay with that.
