That and the story is all over the place and you have to go outside the album to figure out what characters are and their nicknames. Lord nefaryus is nicknamed bug. Why? Never explained until you see it on the official site. Nomac backstory? None in the album, but yea theres an explanation on the website!! This list goes on and on... Sigh I guess I'm just a sucker for story albums which is why I rated it this high, that and it fits my "transition" from heavier music to softer music, if you can believe that.

I just don't understand why someone would listen to this when Rush did the same idea in 20 minutes. Then again, I don't understand why someone would listen to Rush, so maybe I'm just a lost cause. Throw me some Hawkwind.

It's not really the same as 2112, similarities of course, but not exactly the same. I could be wrong though, its been a while since I listened to that album.

Musically, no, but the concept is basically the same. That said there are multiple Rush nods here.

Very true. The stories do start out the same but the ending is different (spoiler: the leader of the empire gives in and powers down the nomacs after music magically restores faythe to life after being stabbed to death.) 2112's ending is the empire taking over everything and leaving music behind, and the main character commiting suicide.
And yes, 2112 is performed and done better. Simpler, easier, and you dont have to research the album outside of... Well... The album.

Replying to @Titan, it's ok, I love discussing music. I'm not exactly new here, it's been a long time since I discovered this site and followed what's new around here, but only now I actually signed up and built an account. Nice talking to you!

DT on the one hand coped succesfully with the depart of Kevin Moore but on the other hand the loss of Mike Portnoy meant the bitter end of the band itself.

Disagree. Portnoy was making the band ridiculous and driving them in a direction the rest of the band wasn't comfortable with except for JP maybe. They just grew apart musically. Portnoy wanted to do heavy stuff and the rest wanted to go back to a more melodic sound. The last albums together were not so good. They had some cool moments (Octavarium, ITPOE, TCOT etc.), but the lyrics were awful and the music was turning bland.

Sorry, I should have clarified: 70's Rush. 80's Rush is where it's at.
|
| |
80s Rush is generally better than 70s Rush but both eras rule.
