Frankly, his reasoning regarding switching to a more visual medium is kind of odd considering how dementedly expressive and adventurous his work was on the first two albums. Far more so than anything in Gothenburg at the time.

Eh, that may be pushing it. There was quite a bit of healthy competition in 1992 as it was during my personal golden age for the genre. That said, it's certainly among the best.

there's really not that many metal albums id classify as "dementedly expressive and adventurous" tbh, and ive heard thormenthor and carbonized so ive heard a little metal in my time

plus a lot of em are pretty new like deathspell omega and whatnot

It's funny that people praise this band's stripped-down approach on Slaughter but this has far more evocative melodies nonetheless.

I gotta agree with him on this one. Red and Fear are leagues above Slaughter compositionally

The new one is leagues ahead as well tbh.

Fear is a weird one for me, everyone lumps it with this & I can't quite love it the same even though it feels like I should dig, strange.

I dunno

He seems to rate Kiske Helloween and Rhapsody highly and there's a lot of elite power metal fans around who think that stuff's for wimps

I guess he just got his opinion and sticks to it. Nothing wrong with that of course

Yeah and it's honestly kind of a shame since those bands (especially in Kiske-era Helloween) did their respective forms of the genre better than many of those who were influenced by them.
