First few minutes of Dead City Centres is the worst moment of their career, it's just physically painful to listen to

I wouldn't call it painful to listen to but it certainly doesn't live up to everything else on here.

The only weaker track here is "We Are the Dead" and "Catalept" is just unnecessary, I guess they only put it on because it's Hitchcock and it'd seem hipster. But I can't see anything wrong with "Dead City Centres"

"Dead City Centres" is fine aside from the two minutes of high-pitched squeaking noises toward the beginning, that's what I was talking about. We Are The Dead is okay, I'm not really a fan of voiceover narration. Catalept is a decent atmospheric interlude-type track.

My point was I feel like those three are objectively the weakest though. They're not bad. We Are The Dead is even a bit funny, but the other songs I enjoy immensely more.

Catalept is probably my favorite of the three

The Future Sound of Music is the greatest thing me ears have ever heard.

"Catalept" sounds great but it's kinda lame because all that Ulver did was add some simple drum loops. It's really hard to consider it an Ulver song so that's why I don't include it as a highlight.

It's only 2 minutes though; it's not quite filler, but it's kinda unimportant.

This album specifically or all of them?

But what don't you like about them? I'm not pretending they're perfect, I just find it strange that you can't find anything to like on any of their albums.

See, to me pretentiousness implies a failure to realise whatever is being strived for, and Ulver hit the mark most of the time. I'd kinda like to see your review, and there's nothing wrong with caring about music you hate.

How the fuck are they pretentious even in the slightest?

Ulver are indeed uber-pretentious, just listen to Messe... or SotS. Or look at their band photos or whatever really. They're maybe the most pretentious band since ELP.

Still, they did record a few great albums.
