you can throw as many archaic technological references and signposts to windows 95 and Eco the fuckin' dolphin all you want, but what is at the core of the design? A philosophical underpinning that relates to a society's (over)use of technology?

but see this isnt how i see vaporwave at all. in fact i dont really find any criticism of "hypercapitalism" in vaporwave at all, even though the idea is exploited.

what vaporwave seeks to do is take things that in the age of capitalism (which is intimately tied to the idea of technology) we were all exposed to incidentally and turn those circumstantial memories into a new narrative that evokes a reaction within the subconscious.

basically what i mean by this is that, most of us (if you're 20 year old or around that age) were forcefully exposed to the environment of capitalism just by virtue of living in a first world country. banal corporate jingles on the tv, weird mid-90s r&b on the radio and old 80's pop songs playing on a CD loop in the mall. all products of the age of advertising and the consuming middle class. except that you never actually thought of any of it as music, it was sort of just environmental sound, like most of the other noises you encounter day to day.

vaporwave seeks to exploit these coincidental memories and evoke a reaction in the subconscious, where these memories have taken up refuge. its no so much about criticizing anything as it is about making the listener more aware of the ramifications of his own environmental education, his own personal history as it pertains to the images and ideas he/she was exposed to as he was conditioned to think by his surroundings.

and maybe it is far fetched to compare this to other, older art movements but i don't think it is completely without worth.

I'm unaware of a manifesto. Where are you getting this information from?

In any case it doesn't matter because once again you've pretty much described Negativland.

and the existence of one artist invalidates the existence of any other that may use similar techniques?

art doesnt result from within a vacuum, no one has original thoughts because ideas are simply the product of the things we're exposed to from birth until the present moment.

for someone who wants solid, logical definitions you sure do resort to fallacious rhetoric and ad homenim arguments quite a bit

This is why I have laid out my argument as clearly as possible. Once again:

1. There is no agreed upon definition of vaporwave.

2. There is no distinction between vaporwave and sound collage other than the choice of samples used.

3. There are no musical or conceptual qualities in vaporwave that cannot be found in other genres of music.

4. To qualify as a genre of music, vaporwave must have an agreed upon definition, be shown to be distinctive from sound collage and have unique musical and conceptual qualities.

C: Therefore, vaporwave is not a real genre of music.

I only need one example to validate premise 2 and 3.

A citation is not necessary when I did not use a paraphrase or quotation. If you truly stand behind

your words Adam, you would address my reasoning. Otherwise, this review is exposed for the

intellectual fraud that it is.

Don't say another Goddamn word, Thales. Up until now, I've been polite. If you say ANYTHING else -
ONE word - on [this] here review? I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its
destination, I will topple the Master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together
a machine of bone and blood, and fueled by my hatred for you this Fear Engine will bore a hole
between this world and that one. When it begins, you will hear the sound of children screaming -as
though from a great distance. A smoking orb of NOTHING will grow above your bed, and from it will
emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch
only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream
down my face, my dark world will begin. I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song
that ends you and the rest of this species that inhabits the pitiful planet you call Earth.

"He said the exact same thing that I did but with far less clarity. "

you're not showing any clarity by turning your arguments into ABC 123, and you're not even saying the same thing as Dev since he's talking about the pretense of Vaporwave and you're just affirming it isn't a genre at all (you're even looking for a genre "defintion" lol)

This thread and thales is just tiring me now, I'm leaving shove it

Hillary is lambsbread and would never concern himself with shit like vapourwave. The only music he listens to is hip hip and pink Floyd.
