The vocal delivery? When does he sound like Maynard?

Its not so much sound but more the delivery like I said.

Like you mean how melodic his voice is? Maynard has (or had) a more versatile range but he's kinda old now. Hmm never really thought of it but to each his own I guess

For me this is their worst album. I get it, you can play music with odd time signatures. Thats all well and good if you can bring it all together and hit hard, but the music here never seems to go anywhere. Themata is one of the greatest albums ever written. Sound Awake took me a while to get into but I eventually came around. Asymmetry is just overall boring. Too much atmosphere, nowhere near enough real attack. Its too bad, I was actually thinking that if this album were as good as the others I might be able to accept Karnivool as one of my favorite bands.

Ok, maybe not literally one of the greatest EVER. But it is definitely in my top 10.

Hi all, just joined, quite a mixed response for a massively anticipated album....
Personally, after many spins, it makes sense to me and I just keep coming back. I think a lot of the negativity springs from just how jarringly unexpected this direction was, with We Are being so "Karnivool-esque"...

Yeah I think after hearing We Are, which I could easily see on Sound Awake, I expected the rest of the album to be like that..
this was not the case

" Was off putting for Ian to scream which he has only done once but briefly on Themata."
That's Jon Stockman, their bass player

Seconded. Digging this quite a lot now, it's seriously grown on me so hard. I feel anyone who is a fan of this band that doesn't like this just hasn't given it enough time.

This is good, but I like their other two releases more... however, this may grow on me and get a higher rating later on.

Okay so I've been listening to this since my last comment , and I think I get why i'm so addicted to this album right now. It's simply because its so excitingly different!
Yea, there's one or two things that don't work as well as the band may have hoped (that out of place final mantra, interesting as it is, its not the way to close the album and Alpha doesn't have the impact that a closing song should have) but the the interludes work for me, a way to digest the ideas either side. And at times, theres a lot to digest.
Its a different approach, SA had a cohesive style through out, different songs with a similar style, guitar tones and vibe. But here, we are treated to a greater variety of great, innovative and powerful ideas on display, some fantastic musicianship (as you'd expect ) and just something fresh we haven't experienced before and i love that boldness. Too many bands play it safe these days, but thank rock n roll Karnivool aren't one of them!
For those that continuously cite Tool influences in this album, well, your wrong. They may have some shared techniques, but the way the tunes make you feel, totally different!
Nachash is epic as fuck, and the delivery of the first few vocal bars is sweet as
"Here we go. Our minds recoil.
Out of control, in this spinning wheel."
Too good!
The Refusal is a great song, never know what's coming and how else could you sing "we are a broken wreck, weve both got piles of regrets" other than screaming the house down! Love it, it occurs on one song in the album and people are virtually crying!
Anyway, im off to listen to it again, 'cos no one is gonna put out a record as different and daring as this for a looong time!
