This album is great. Obzen was phenomenal too, but it didn't click with me as much as Koloss has.

Kinda stoked to go back through the entire catalog and listen to the changes in sound.

I think I may write up a review for it. I don't think I've reviewed anything on this site since 2005-

2006 when I was about 15-16 years old - painful, painful memories.

My opinion on the two leaked songs has changed for the better. Ironically when listening to this I think they might even be the most worthwhile. obZen was a strong 3.5 and this definitely doesn't top it.

I agree with what you said about their past releases. Catch 33 and obZen are great albums but Koloss is much more accessable in sound. I guess what makes this band so unique is that they can properly deconstruct the genre and rebuild it from scratch. Not an easy thing to do well but that's what I admire the most about Meshuggah.

it's solid and grooves hard but isn't good enough to blast for weeks or months on end.

Funny how all of the songs they released early are the weakest ones.

They've even said themselves that it's a stripped down sound and their most straight forward, but in my opinion it doesn't make it any less good. It's still pummels your face in and allows for sufficient head bangage. There are good pieces of melody scattered.

Here's a great interview of Haake explaining the album.

still letting it sink in completely, I'm stuck between a strong 4 and 4.5

I'm trying to listen to it fully then go to something else and come back to it, otherwise it'll peak early

right on, and that's after a first listen too? I thought I read you hadn't listened to them before, that's a good sign ;)

and yea well Haake is one of my biggest influences drum wise, mainly for grooves, but their music is just so powerful, if I'm wasted I'll headbang so hard to these guys more than anything, it just hits the right spot
