I'm going to go ahead and pretend this album doesn't exist.

mastille: Oh, don't take that too seriously! It's just me saying I disagree. I think the way you compared the album to an Asking Alexandria video rubbed me the wrong way. I just do not think it's on that low a level.
I just feel like people are being overly emotional and mistaking an album that isn't bad for some kind of travesty. It's a little weird to watch for me.

I just don't understand how anyone could listen to ...Is A Real Boy or IDOTG and not prefer them to this in every single way.

Obviously IARB and IDOTG are better but that doesn't automatically make this bad

Meh, Burn a Miracle is still great. This isn't awful. Not amazing, but not a huge step down from their last album.

I think what JumpTheFuckUp means is that this album doesn't set itself apart enough for it not to remind him of a worse version of IARB or IDOTG, and I agree entirely. The songs here are all still really catchy, at least they have that going for them, but the lyrics aren't even a fraction of what we got on IARB, and the whole thing feels like a rehash, or some kind of like, Say Anything greatest hits album without any of their actual greatest hits.

Oh and most of the things that do set it apart from those albums are shit and terrible.

Really aside from Admit It Again this is nothing like IARB or IDOTG, it has far more in common with their self-titled

Say Anything is obviously leagues and leagues above Asking Alexandria. I mentioned them because I've only heard them in their 'Final Episode' video recently. That song threw elements together that... should have been assembled in another way (or in AA's case in different...genres, songs...).
I had no idea what the point or even mood of the song was supposed to be. I had that same feeling hearing these songs, which had ideas but rarely realized them. Calm instrumentals and angsty vocals. More like a sitting rebellion than anarchy. The lyrics... don't help. And if any song gets the word for illogical insanity, it's Sheep. Along with Admit it Again.
Most pop-punk songs have some sense of urgency about them (sometimes saving them), or at least some LOGICAL insanity, but this album lacked those too.

Clearly I can't just post a one-liner about this like
'It's like this one' 'It's more like the other one' 'It doesn't freaking matter!'
when I haven't heard their other albums
IN MY DEFENSE

Yeah I just don't really understand your point
If it's the fact that the "anarchy" angle is pretty weak, then sure, I agree. The songs work far better individually then as an overarching theme

"Say Anything is obviously leagues and leagues above Asking Alexandria."
Wut.
i mean, I would surely hope so...

Had to include the Asking Alexandria line cause I had an earlier comment that mentioned them without making that distinction, so people assumed I meant the opposite.
@Crymson You're right that the songs work better individually than together, but thing is, I don't think all the songs realized their own identities either.
Each song generally had good and really catchy instrumentals/vocals, but then somehow diluted itself. Either with a confusing riff and awkward screams (Admit it Again), an 'angry song' with calm instrumentals and a not-so-calm voice singing mediocre lyrics, leaving me wondering where the punch was (Sheep, On Steel), or songs that had good sections but never reached their potential (most), and somehow had a monotone energy level (Night's Song, Anarchy My Dear).

I like this album just cause it has that Say Anything flair, but it's not my favorite. I'm not a fan of the indie direction, but I still enjoy the majority of the songs. Max said "One of the main things behind the writing process for the record was wanting to write something that would really just wow our core fanbase."
I'm not sure who the core fanbase is. Is it us?

I just do not find the lyrics mediocre or the music awkward, I don't think any "angry" songs aren't "angry" enough... I wouldn't even call "Sheep" angry, I'm not sure why you want it to be.
I don't care for the title track, so I wont defend it, I looked forward to it ending.
I don't see why this is so bad. As good as those other albums? No. But a band can have a worst album without it being a 1 or 1.5... Worst album for a band does not equal worst album out of all albums by any band.

You know, maybe it's actually the indie vibe that I don't dig. Indie + pop-punk + that riff in Admit it Again + Sheep's synths + 'IT'S MY LIFE...'x10 + occasional screams = ??
I just think the lyrics didn't match the song's mood/instrumentals at parts, or were just a bit less complex than, say, a real (and good) indie band's lyrics. It's almost the same problem I had with Mayday Parade (except the 'indie' part) - lyrically Anarchy My Dear to Say Anything is what Anywhere but Here was to Mayday Parade.
If you like the vibe and the songs speak to you, and make sense, maybe you're more of an indie fan than me. Or something. We'll have to agree to disagree.
