well, I mean it's still popular, its a fucking Whopper. They sell like 10 million a day. What I'm saying is, it's still F-grade meat with fake "flame-broiled" flavor added, on the same shitty bun, made by the same minimum wage workers, served through a drive-thru window.
It's the old, "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig" argument.
I'm not against progressive leanings, but I don't think they inherently make an artist/album good (see Buried and Me, Between the)

Yeah, I know. Crack the Skye seemed like it was more of an experiment than anything, which is why the progressive elements were sometimes weak and poorly fleshed out. I hope you aren't talking about anything before that though.

meh, I'm not huge on Blood Mountain, though I do enjoy it a lot more than CtS. Remission and Leviathan are my favorites from Mastodon, along with this one. Not sure how I'd rank them, but generally it would be one of the first two in the top spot.

Blood mountain is goofy as hell to the point where it's just stupid sometimes (Bladecatcher, Siberian Divide, the end of Sleeping Giant) but more than half of that album is some of Mastodon's best work.

I see what you're saying Inveigh, that's fair enough.
It just comes down to what people want to hear in the "ingredients." A lot of the stuff present on their previous albums that I liked a lot about them, they did away with on this one. and I know that they changed/added things that some people liked.
and it also depends on what attributes of the "meat" and "ingredients" you consider quality. it varies from person to person and at the end of the day it comes down to what your ears want to hear. it's different for mostly everyone and that's cool. nothing would be interesting if everyone agreed on this stuff. I was just curious what angle other ppl saw this from.

I think I'd like this album a lot more if it wasn't a Mastodon album.

at least it's better than blood mountain. the fact that it doesn't have some outlandish, inane "concept" helps.

I don't even understand everyone's griping about blood mountain, I really don't.

with the exception of sleeping giant, i just find it dull.

I dunno, I used to find almost all of the second half to be boring as fuck, but for the longest time it was the only mastodon record I had so it grew on me a lot. I consider most of the album to be as enjoyable as anything from leviathan or remission at this point.

I personally found the concepts really interesting, and would probably like this album more if it had one

"I personally found the concepts really interesting, and would probably like this album more if it had one"
agreed. I think there is a loose sense of an over-arching concept at a few different points, but the concept was one of the best parts of Leviathan. that same kind of presence isn't here. I'm sure some people like it that way, but I definitely do not prefer it.

But Leviathan's concept is actually intelligible.

Would the hunter be cooler if the lyrics were satanic instead about having sex in space and having temper tantrums?
