After listening to this five times in a row this morning, then listening to Beggars once through, I had to lower my rating again. This record is so emotionally flat and distanced compared to the ridiculously soulful music on Beggars. Hell, I like the title song, "Beggars," better than the entirety of Major/Minor. I'm genuinely surprised that so many of you have rated this as highly as you have.

"emotionally flat" Not sure how you can say that when there's songs like Blur, Call it in the air, Words in the water, Anthology, Disarmed on the record. I can at least not blame you for not trying to get into the record.

The album's quite dissapointing. Beggars is a bit better than this.

Felix, perhaps "emotionally flat" was not the appropriate description. I suppose "emotionally hollow" may be a better one; it all seems phoned in to me. I mean, I like "Promises" musically, but lyrically, it is essentially a rehash of "The Weight." I don't know, man. It does not come across as a coherent, powerful record as Beggars did for me; it seems to meander and wander down well-worn paths, but it never really finds its own as an album. I'm really disappointed, is what I'm trying to get across here, as I count Thrice as one of my favorite bands ever.

Well I whole heartedly disagree with you And Promises as Dustin has put himself is lament when The wight is more of a plead on the matter. But Beggars is "slower" and maybe you resonate with with instrumentally more because of that factor.

Some cool and catchy moments but also boring deja vu songs.

Yellow Belly and Promises are good songs.

After 2 complete listens I've come to the conclusion that this is my least favorite album they've done since Vheissu.. I loved Vheissu, The Alchemy Index's, and even Beggars had moments of glory. I feel like this is almost a straight forward rock album for them. The lyrics aren't as good, and there is little to no experimentation in the instruments or vocals, as found on Vheissu or The Index's. Don't get me wrong, everything is spot on, but I've heard all these progressions before... A tad disappointing.

It just occured to me that this is the only Thrice album I haven't played in my car. That's usually where I'm able to judge an album best. I'm not giving up on this one; I owe it to these guys.

Felix, I dig the overall cleaner tone, soulful feel, crisp production, and coherency of Beggars, and I guess that "slower" dynamic comes into play as well. Beggars is the record on which I find the band's comparison to Radiohead most clearly justified. It reminds me of Thrice's version of In Rainbows; concise, powerful, pained, and unreasonably beautiful.

I'm not trying to persuade anyone to either like or dislike the album, Killerhit. I'm just having a discussion about it with some fellow Sputnikers in order to gain some perspective and perhaps find something in the record that I've missed.

Also, I listened to it in my car and had to raise it back up again. I'm keeping an open mind, so please don't close the argument; it keeps me thinking.
