I wonder if we'll ever get any unreleased demos or anything like that. As sad as i am about his passing and as selfish as this is, its a huge bummer we'll never get another FR album.

Floating In the Forth is no longer a cathartic closer to me. ultimately i think it was meant to be a positive song, what with the encouragement to "take your life, give it a shake" and "gather up all your loose change", and putting off suicide for another day or another year because maybe things arent so bad. the fact that he just carried out exactly what he was thinking about in this song ruins any sort of life-affirming spin this had for me.

so i just stumbled upon this, i guess the girl he wrote about in TMOF was on that Big Brother TV show, and here's Scott on Big Brother talking about her. so weird.

Scott does a pretty cool guitar solo for this Scottish indie rock band (gonna have to check them now, its a good song).

"the fact that he just carried out exactly what he was thinking about in this song ruins any sort of life-affirming spin this had for me."
I totally get where you're coming from, however I have to disagree. The song was as life affirming in the moment he wrote it as you probably perceived it to be. Depression is an illness and he managed to survive another 10 years after those thoughts when he could have committed suicide back then. If someone was battling a terminal illness and beat it into remission for a decade, but ultimately died because of it in the future, the attitude probably wouldn't be "well I guess he fought for nothing"...I know that's not what you're saying at all but I look at it as he staved off succumbing to the ultimate depressive fate for longer than many others could have. The "I think I'll save suicide for another day" ended up being more literal than I would have liked, but I have no choice but to perceive the song positively because otherwise it feels like I'm faulting him somehow.

It's a difficult listen for me now and I've barely listened to the song since. It used to be probably my favourite on the album.
Two really interesting perspectives though and I see where you're both coming from.

I respect Julien Baker paying tribute but yeah, the strings and keys take a lot of the bite out of the tune

Twilight Sad and WWPJ are similar artists, would I dig?
|

Yeah, give it time though. It's quite familiar sounding at the start to other groups, so kinda seems not 'that' special. But I grew to love it, and every word on it!

Lyrically, I think you'll fucking adore it too. Really heartbreaking stuff, it's become a faovurite for sure

It really deserves it, it's probably been the album i've connected with most in recent
edit - also the new Julien Baker version of Modern Leper is nice

There were a few songs I didn’t get on with that well (kind of an oddly Mumford and Sons vibe in a few that I found offputting) but there were several clear standouts already on first listen.
