I'd say they both emerged around the same time in the late 90s with like Morning Again, Shai Hulud, Poison the Well, etc. Different takes but focused on the melodic side of the genre. Melodic hardcore predates it w stuff like Descendents and Bad Religion which people would prob call pop punk today

Not this release necessarily but Counterparts is more melodic hxc to me than true metalcore. Lots of punk elements and stuff. I’m bad at describing differences I just know when I hear it lol
