I disagree with your idea that Merriweather was intended to be a humanistic electronic record. I think rather that it took the sort of Brian Wilson, sixties wall of sound pop that so much indie bands focus on and transcended it by playing pop-based tunes with samplers and various effects processors. I find it to be the opposite of regressive. If anything it sounds like a futuristic pop record in my head. The Beach Boys of the electronic age. As opposed to trying to bring a summery, human element to electronic music.

And by that right, I suppose it does seem a little contrived, but it works so well. This is nowhere near their opus in my opinion, but I'm in the minority on that one, so. I think my largest problem with this album is how quickly it became unimportant to me emotionally; the music still remains overly enjoyable though.

The correlation score of comparing this to Cosmogramma is 0.

Didn't read to see where that comparison was made, but I agree entirely. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it sounds futuristic, but further more I don't see how it's eclectic structure is a problem.

Not to mention that they both have extensive use of sampling and sound manipulation.

You'd be trying a little too hard to pull it off, and its comparison would still remain entirely irrelevant. Whereas Cosmogramma is an electronica album, this is more pop oriented

"... records produced by bands like Vampire Weekend or Architecture in Helsinki, would then seem stand"
shouldn't that be seem to stand
|
| |
why is that a bad reason to not like it
overrated means that people say it is amazing when it is in fact mediocre

illmitch: Were you aware of the praise this received before you heard it? I find that often detracts from the value of an album, as your expectations were likely set too high.

i was a big animal collective fan before this album came out, loved it when i first heard it, then realized that apart from a few tracks its not too good
i generally put little to no faith in the music taste of this site

Album Rating: 4.5
Well, it's all subjective, but I personally connected with this album on an emotional level, which at first made me appreciate it more than I would have otherwise. After a while it does seem tepid in sections. I still maintain that Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished is their opus, and I'm definitely in the minority here.
