"Ars feels threatened that these dudes are labelled 'zany' but unlike Ween they don't blow sizeable donkey dong"
I almost spit out my coffee on my screen. Goddamnit doof.
And what's wrong with sucking off a dong exactly?????????

'actual weirdos make weird music'
See, that sounds more contrived if they're actually trying to make weird music from the start.
I don't feel like this band are actively pushing weirdness just for the sake of it. You're probably approaching this on too cerebral a level and also coming with a mega tonne of preconceptions (something something hipster, something something overhyped on pitchfork)

When is it ok?

Doof you're assuming random things about my opinion of this
I don't feel threatened by this, it just sucks honestly

Also "weirdos making weird music" is literally the opposite of contrived because their music is just musicians being themselves (please tell me how being yourself is contrived?) and
Since this comes off as normal dudes trying to be weird I'd say contrived makes far for sense here for obvious reasons

The weirdness here doesn't seem contrived to me because, unlike a lot of other weird music I've heard, they use the weirdness to convey emotions (as Doof put it, the emotions associated with "the transition from childhood to adulthood"), rather than just being weird for the sake of it.

Agreed with Boney and Doof; this absolutely nails the use of experimental and unusual textures/sounds as a tool to convey emotion. And the contrast of the (at times) manic vocals with the instrumentation is fantastic

The Mollusk is also a 4.5 in my eyes, but I understand the Ween hate, they aren't for everyone

I like a small amount of the weeny.
I have no problem with people being in a rush to form an opinion over certain bands...but when you hit something like Animal Collective you've got to be careful, they're arguably the most important/influetial/consistent band of the 00's with a massive discog.
It's all very well going 'hur hur the hipsters' but you do instantly become the dreaded 'dude who dismisses The Beatles after listening to Yellow Submarine twice'.

"they're arguably the most important/influetial/consistent band of the 00's with a massive discog."
Honestly, most of what they seemed to influence was indie pop/indietronica and that stuff is generally boring as shit

Comparing these guys to The Beatles seems faulty since the Beatles had widespread commercial appeal
Also I listened to all of Strawberry Jam twice... are you trying to say the entire album is only as good as Yellow Submarine?
